Can't find perma tune for my car...help?
1970 911t - anybody know where I can get one? Or, should I just go with MSD or something else? Opinions from early car guys who have done the conversion most welcome!
Thanks, Allan |

I believe you need to replace your distributor in order to use a Pertronix kit.

I would seriously consider an MSD or stock Bosch CDI before a Permatune. Do a search here for the "whole story".

Thanks.
Looks like I'll be going the Bosch route if I can find one. |

Allan,
I just went through the MSD conversion on my 70T 2.2. The car came with the blue Permatune but I changed it over to the Bosch 3 pin I found on Ebay. I don't have much experience with the Permatune, but it does work, and people say that the older blue ones are better than the newer silver ones. Nobody seems to have a very good opinion of Permatune though. The Bosch has always worked perfectly. The MSD conversion turned into more of a project than I thought it would be with replacing plug wires, modifying the rotor etc. The biggest improvement I made was getting rid of the Merelli dizzy and replacing with Bosch. I also got the Crane optical points replacement. I have both the Permatune and Bosch boxes if you need one. Not sure what a fair price would be, but I'd say the Bosch would be your best bet. Steve

Thanks for the info Steve. I am not sure what a fair price is either, but I am interested in you Bosch unit. I already have a bosch dizzy - so no marelli nightmares!
Are you happy with the optical points? Was it an easy install? Thanks, Allan |

Allan,
I'd say about $55 including shipping would be good for the Bosch. I just took it out about a week ago and was working perfectly. Of course there's no way to tell how much more life it has in it, but no signs of trouble at this point. The Crane quality was iffy, but it did go in with some minor tweeking. I posted some pics and notes here a while back that you should be able to find with a search. It seems to work fine. No more wondering about dwell.

Here's a shot of the Bosch... This is the 3 pin that you need right?

Steve,
What's the story on that fuel filter console?

Bobby-
That is a Mallory Comp 140 filter I put in over the Winter when I added the braided lines. I had a pretty rusty fuel tank that I never had coated, so I run one filter before the pump up front and this one in the rear. Probably overkill, but it looks nice.

Thanks Steve. It looks like a great alternative to the MFI filters on the early cars. These (MFI) cost about $60 a piece these days.
It's hard to be overkill when you consider that it costs over $1000 to rebuild a MFI injection pump and about $300 for the fuel pump. I ran two filters on my 72' MFI car for this reason. The cold start valve would have to be accomodated somehow to work with MFI but it's worth looking into.

I'm using mine with carbs, but I think that filter is rated for fuel injection. I picked it up used on Ebay for $15.
