my car has brandnew factory horns, but i was thinking maybe some smaller ones to facilitate ease of oil cooler install. (plus less stuff in front blocking air) are they loud and euro sounding? any cheaper versions out there?

Are those AAOOOOOGAAHH horns? The description says they're loud. Are they obnoxious too?

Emission 06-21-2005 01:55 PM

Look like a nice set of horns.

You are aware Griots is kinda "pricey" (ahem) so do a search and see if you can find them elsewhere for less.

They are loud. Nothing obnoxious just loud. Small and easy to get oil lines around as well. More like blap/blap...no cute or pretty notes from these. Just a business like "BLap"!

Let me know if you do swap yours out. I need some horns!

No problem. Let us know if you like them.

I use these for the same reason you are pondering. They don't sound as nice as the trumpets but they'll do.

I use VW horns. Looks like the red ones.

randywebb 06-21-2005 04:56 PM

yup - Hella horns. Everything at Griot's can be had for about 30-50% less elsewhere...

niner11 06-21-2005 05:09 PM

Cliff, I bought those exact horns from the link above about a year ago and yes they are loud

Not really obnoxious but a deeper sound than the factory trumpets.

It will definately wake up people in minivans on the telephone.

Also you can use military horns in case that you want to attract the atention.

Preowned BMW 5 or 7 series horns are very effective and very inexpensive.

If you find they're not obnoxious enough, try them with relays. Wired with relays like you'd use for overwattage headlights, they are painfully loud. And it's a sharp loudness that cannot be ignored. I have them on my Subaru and they are amazing, but only after I relayed them--with the stock wiring they were much quieter and more "bleat"-y sounding.

Hella makes two versions, 1 German made and 1 Indian made.
Germans cost about $15 more. Make a loud Euro sound. Very similar to porsche 911/mercedes alarms. Be sure to mount vertically. Mounted mine facing straight down and water collected and ran through gaskets and toasted horns inside of 10 months, on my daily driver.
