911 Resurrection

I have a 1974 911 coupe that has been setting up without any prep since 1991. I have started to bring the car back to life and have the electrical system up. The next step is to replace the fuel pump which had failed. I talked to a mechanic about restarting the car. He felt that if I changed the oil and lubricated the cylinder walls by removing the plugs, spaying the cylinders and turning it over by hand, it would be safe to try to crank it up. I need some input as to the best way to try to start it up. Is there a spay lubricant that I could use to lubricate the cylinders. What else should I do before trying to crank it up. How can I be sure the fuel tank lining is OK. I will be changing all filters before attempting to start it.

Check all of the fuel system, especially the tank. Take the plugs out as you were going to and put is some Marvel Mystery Oil. Distrubute with air pressure. Crank by hand foward only and then crank it with the starter with the plugs still out until you see oil pressure.

You are probably going to have some problems with the fuel/induction system w/o some serious inspection and some cleaning. Things will just get worse if you suck up rust from the tank. Please start there or completely bypass the tank. I let my car take gas from a can and return it to a 2nd can to see what was going to come out. I used a refurbished tank right after that. Expect a lot of smoke even maybe for several miles while the rings get loose.

Good luck and welocome to the forum. Let us know how it goes. Oh, and check the condition of the fuel lines everywhere you can and don't drive the car until you've gone over the brakes the same way and flushed out the system.
