Cool Exhaust Smell In Cabin Thru Passanger Defrost Vent on Dashboard

I'm certainly not familiar how the heating/defroster/air system works, but the symptoms of Baby Porschaa are the following:

When I start her in the mornings I can see something coming only through the passenger defroster vent and it is reflected on the glass (windshield) as if heat, exhaust or something is flowing/blowing through.

Does anybody know how is all connected? I have not been able to relate a topic on this forum to mine. I have not bee able to find a full diagram of how is all connected but I have played with the Heating system panel and it is working properly. It allows air when open. The fan goes on. Air is released according to the position of the middle knob.

I hope is something as simple as replacing all the Heater Hoses but before I put my hands on her I would like to confirm. Any information is greatly appreciated.

By the way she is a 30 years old 911

Best guess. A small leak from the valve cover gasket or the oil temp sender. Drips on the heat exchanger. There by causing a little oil smell in the heater.
The quick version. The exhaust pipes are wrapped with a cover. That cover is the heat exchanger. The heat created/collected in that cavity is your heater. If oil drips or leaks in the heat exchanger. Your going to get a little smell with your heat.

Exhaust smell throuigh the heater is but part of the 911 charm. The cabin heat comes from heat exchangers around the exhaust. All air coolers have that lovely oil/leather/exhaust smell. Suck it up.

Dont be concerned about the air con. Its purely decorative.

Post a pic of your dash controls and someone with a similar car will sort you out.

If you don't like the smell. You should have bought a water pumper. Just kidding.

The oil smell kind of comes with the territory.

Living in the emerald city your going to need your defroster. If its REAL bad you'll need to find the leak.

You're right! No wonder as I was doing an inspection on her this last weekend I saw for the first time a small stain on the exhaust but there wasn't any signs of an oil leak, but since your mention the oil temp sender it all makes sense.
I have to figure out how to upload a pic on this forum but I'm working on it.

not a joking matter

if the right heat exchanger is leaking thru one of the exhaust tubes into the air duct surrounding the exh tubes, then that is a dangerous condition and would require the heat exchanger to be replaced. You really don't want exhaust flowing into the cabin . . .

Todd its not really exhaust. Because of the pressure you'd hear an exhaust leak. Its oil getting into the cavity around the exhaust tube, where the air is heated for use in the cabin.
It doesn't take much to taint the air going in the cabin.
