front valance painting, what do you think?

I am putting on a new front valance on my 83 sc (updating to the newer carrera style) and what to know what you think on painting it. Should I paint it with the original look with the undercoating (same as the rocker panels), or should I paint it without?

thanks

I am doing the same except going from a Carrera to a Club Sport sans the fogs.

I would think you want the rubberized coating on there - otherwise you will wind up with a pitted mess eventually. The valence is so low it is hardly noticeable with the coating on it IMO.

That is the route I am taking with the rubberized coating.

I've used the body schutz on the bottom of my spoiler. If the proper paint system is used it will absorb impact better and help prevent at least some of the chipping. It's also much easier to touchup if you do get a chip.

Don't forget to get a bit of the paint if someones painting for you.

I struggled with the same decision a few months ago when I decided to repaint my valance. I decided to keep the undercoating and I'm glad I did.

Rocker panel spray. It's a 3M product. Don't use the stuff from Auto Stores. I got mine from a Automotive paint supply store. It came in two grades, Pebbly and smoother. I opted for smoother texture. It came out perfect.

The rear rocker panel on the cat side did not for I used rubberized undercoating from the auto parts store. It has blistered but not popped. Repaint in the future.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I think I will go ahead and paint the new valance with the undercoating to match the orig. look and for the extra protection. I'll also check into the 3m Rocker panel spray and see what thats like.

Thanks again.

I've used allot of different chip resistant coatings. Most I have tried look allot like painted 40 grit sandpaper and don't work all that well. The best one I have used is Sikkens OTO Body Coat. I have found it to look the most like a factory coating. It
goes on thick so it will scratch fairly easily, but resists stone chips very well.

part no 05911 Rocker Panel Spray
oneblueyedog,

is this the 3M Rocker Panel Spray clear - fine to medium texture? can I paint right on top of it and do you think one can will be enough to do my front valance?

also, if I decide to go the route of using Wurth SKS StoneGard, can I use a regular automotive paint spray gun or do I have to use the wurth spray gun? due to possibly clogging a regular automotive paint spray gun?

thanks for all your help, I'm still trying to figure out which way to go.

I've wondered about Linex. They can spray that stuff in a pretty thin layer.

You'll need a special gun. I believe JC Whitney sells one very inexpensively.

Here's an extensive discussion: Wurth SKS stone guard?

On the 3M product- It is translucent if I remember correctly. I think I gave it 2 coats. It was not as pimply as the oem rocker panels. but similar. I shot a primer coat on it. Then base coat clear coat PPG silver metallic.

I have over half the can left over.

On chip resistance- about the same as what was on there. I'm sure it will have to be redone in 2-3 years.
