Yet another A/C question
Did a search, not what I was looking for.
I have an ROW car with an aftermarket A/C system it doesn't blow worth a darn. US cars seem to blow real well, is there a difference in the A/C plumbing, for example, my A/C evaporator box in the smugglers box has one opening for the air intake, but the US versions seem to have two, any thoughts. |
Have you compared the a/c output in your car with the a/c output from a US car?
US car a/c output isn't that great compare with most car of the same years. The side vents in my Porsche doesn't put out as much cold air as the side vents in my BMW 525I. |
I believe my car has a different plenum under the dash than US cars. I don't have the bow tie thingy.

Hugh,
I have an 85 RoW and it is exactly the same. Aftermarket air, no bowtie, etc. On mine, they put a Y in the front and tied in the defrost vents. The idea is good but it robs too much airflow from the main vents and the air flowing up the windshield gets heated by the time it reaches me. I pulled the hose and capped both ends and get much better airflow now. Still not great by any means. It appears to me that the bowtie on mine was capped over to increase airflow as well. It was done well and maybe it is just factory capped. I have contemplated cutting the hole but haven't. I will tell you that I get less airflow that my 83SC that had factory air. It just doesn't blow as hard. Hope this helps. I have all the documentation for my A/C. Do you know what kind yours is? I could scan and email to you if it is the same. |
Hey Laddsc
Thanks for the thoughts. Frankly, I don't know what type mine is. I don't have a hole or remnants of a hole for the bow tie. Its just not there. When you say you have the documentation, what do you mean? On my car, when the A/C is on I get air flow to the defrost vents, dash vents and the under dash vents. When the fresh air blower is on, I only get air flow to the defrost and under dash vents, not the dash vents themselves. Is this "normal". |
The documentation I have is the installation docs that show exactly what was done. It was helpful to me in sorting out how they changed things and where relays, etc. were.
When my ac was on prior to capping the hoses, I only got airflow to the dash vents and the defrost vents. Make sure that you move the top lever on your fresh air fan all the way to the left when running the ac. Otherwise you are still venting in hot air from outside. The "only" purpose of the dash vents is for ac. From reading various threads, it doesn't appear they have any function on ac delete cars. Kindof strange. If you pull off the cardboard cover to the whole fan/ac assembly, you will see the Y connector I am referring to. I will try to get a photo of the area as well. |
Laddsc
Thanks for the advise. I'll pull that cardboard cover off tonight and see what's up. I just can't believe how little air flow I get from the squirrel cage fan in the smuggler's box. With the fan out of the car, it blows a real breeze. Its almost like I've got a rag (or a dead rat) stuck in the hoses (on second thought, maybe I do). |
Hugh,
I have the documentation on my a/c in pdf if you want it. Just pm me your email address and I will send it to you. Mine is a Diavia made in Italy. Ladd |
Ladd, you have a PM
|
Ladd sent me the info on the Diavia system which solves a mystery for me. Its the system that was in my car. Thanks Ladd!
