Anthony- I noticed your SC in the 'pits' at the school (I remember the SCWDP plate). Did you run the SC or the 914?

The fast course was fun! I didn't get to run the slow course as I had to leave early on Sunday- how was that one?

Just got off the phone with a sales rep at TireRack.

I asked him what exactly does the Survey results chart represent? He said its just feedback from a bunch of people who don't know what their comparing.

So, don't be makin no purchases based on some funky chart!

He also said all the ultra high performance tires are going to ride about the same, bad, unless you want to give up some performace.

I love the honesty, I couldn't stop laughing.

Funny thing is, now I'm more likely to buy from them because their telling me the truth.

That was me. I ran the SC. I had a blast. I did a 51 on the long course which was faster than most of the boxsters in my group.

The tight couse was fun too. I was wishing I had the 914 for it. Still, I went out with a second instructor and he got me running the first 2/3rds in 2nd gear and then after the first slalom I went back to 1st gear and finished it out. That seemed about the fastest way around it for me.

Good stuff.
51 sec on the fast course was faster than all the 993's in my group I think. I got down to 53 seconds on the fast course in my SC- my instructor thought we were sliding around too much so had me bleed 6psi out of the tires (Kumho 712s) for the last run which got me down to 52.

I'm not sure if I could have handled a 2-1 shift on the slow course :)

I have the SO 2A's on my Turbo and they are superior to the PZeros and Contisports IMO.

I have S-02's on the 968, and wasn't too keen on them, until I got in a short decreasing radius entrance ramp at 6000 in second gear one night a few weeks ago. It was like being in a slot, no drift. So,now I like them.
I still run two sets of Yokahama's on the SC, however.

anyone run the Eagle F1 DS-G3 tires in the rain?

patkeefe 06-24-2005 07:03 PM

Oh, BTW, the S-02's make me nervous in the rain, and will absoluteely not move an inch in the snow

There are actual side by side tests on the TR site. I don't put a great deal of stock in the customer opinion poll either. Look at the actual tests.

anthony 06-24-2005 07:20 PM

I haven't tried my F1's in the rain yet but they are supposed to be great. In tire rack's head to head test they edged out the SO-3 in the rain. I look forward to some rainy autocrosses this year!

The m500 avon is no where near the s03 - by any means.

Look at the Tire Rack *Test* numbers not the *Survey* numbers. I agree the latter is bogus.

Tests done on their track with either a BMW 330 or Lexsus IS. In the case of the Avon and the S03, both done with a BMW 330, same size tires on the same car, on the same track. Click on the links in my post above to see for yourself.

My point was that the numbers are relative - they only pertain to the given test. They should not be directly compared to separate tests.

Serge
Same car, same track, same tire sizes. But yes, they done on different days.

I just picked up a set of Avons and will post my opinions against the S03s and RA1s that i have used in the past.

My experience:

7x8x16: Squirmy

7x9x17: Fantastic

Pilot SXs on 7x9x17s are the best street tire I've ever driven.

damn, i wanted to take pics at the AX school. hot enough out there? my S03 took a beating last year at the school. i must of flatted them a bit, because after that class, i have a tiny shimmy at the wheel at 90mph. i will probably get anther set.

911Velocity 07-03-2005 09:49 AM

S03s are as good as any others for hard street driving but they are expensive. I like a pure track tire for the track.

Best regards,
Gerry
