what`s the procedure for running a single wiper
 

l`ve done the reverse wiper mod and it`s acceptable but l`m looking at single wiper conversion.The easy way to do this is to pull the pass.sd wiper...but what`s the right way? What l think l`d like is a center mount that parks in the middle like l`ve seen on some high dollar euro tuner Porsches displayed in the periodicals we all support.Anybody ever done this? Can l mod the wiper assy. or run direct from the motor with no linkage? l`ll be taking things apart soon....any help appreciated:)

I've heard of a 944 wiper conversion, but haven't seen any how-to dox on it. It's supposed to be lighter.

Best way to do it is use a 944 rear wiper motor, first cutting out one of the wiper mounts to be welded back in at your position of choice. 2 small holes and 2 big holes will need ot be plugged and welded. Then center and cut a new hole and weld in the the wiper arm mount so you have the correct factory look and angle. Cut a new washer hole if you require one.

Refinish and paint as needed.

Kinda spendy for a single wiper. But done right that is the lightest way and you can center the wiper arm. But a centered wiper arm isn't required.

Couple of other options. The least amount of work for a professional look (ala the original 935s) is to modify the existing motor and internal frame first. Then weld over the passenger side holes and refinish and paint.

Easiest and some might think the best ( I am in this boat) is simply reverse the wipers, then pull the entire passenger side arm and finally add a 19" or 20" blade for the driver.

Easy enough and costs nothing besides a bit of time and a new $6.00 wiper.

Visability in the rain for the driver with a single 19" wiper is better than the 2 stock 14"s. It is also certainly acceptable for even the most picky passenger. Loosing the dbl wiper system also gives the passenger better visability when it is not raining.

Reversing the wipers is something I now think mandatory for my driving position and the best possible visability.

The factory moved the wipers to the port side for a good reason-- when you shut them off, if they park on the starboard side, you get a river or slush and water flowing up in front of the driver's face (LHD).

That's why they moved them.

Good point John. I checked my British issues of 911 & Porsche World magazines and sure enough the wipers are parked on the opposite side. I might still move mine since I drive the car less and less in the rain in favor of the old Pathfinder.

John just think of the amount of water a single 20" wiper moves from that position in a heavy NW down pour.

It is a small detail I can live with to gain much better vision 99% of the time. When it is raining so hard that you notice the "flood" it is only going to be 1/2 the wiper strokes. The majority of it runs down the wiper line and isn't thrown in front of the driver.

RainX can be part of the answer as well so you don't have to use a wiper at all..

If you go to a single wiper you'll also want a bigger blade. Only way to park the bigger blade on the glass is to reverse the wipers.

Have had the wiper reversal on my Carrera for 3 years now. It's my daily driver up here in Northern Ca. Have noticed no difference in visibility w/the reversal in the rain. I put a 14" wiper on the driver side for more coverage. MUCH better view of the road w/o the wipers parked in the driver’s side.

Single Wiper
 

I'm currently in the process of making a single wiper too!

I chose to modify the exsiting motor using the drivers side to center or right side park (haven't decided yet).

Heres two photos of how I modified it! I had to make the support for the linkage to make it work smoothly...watch your fingers when bench testing (you don't have to ask why :rolleyes: )

Next up is to modify a 928 fan switch to operate the wiper motor as I have removed the old controls off the column.

Good tips on the wiper blade, I'll have to check that out.

The stock 911 wiper motor assembly? Gotta be the most over engineered piece in the car...and dangerious as well ;)

Jim Calzia is the first person to document the 944 rear wiper install. The cite to the article is on my Models Comparison doc at Thom's web site, RennLight -- not much info. If anybody wants the wt. savings, and it isn't in the article or my spreadsheet data, let me know. I think I have some phone notes or Emails saved from Jim that have it. I ultimately decided it didn't make sense for a street car -- in the PNW anyway.

re Slush & water movement up the LH side of the windshield:
Note that JC is in Seattle and arerrac is in the Bay Area (and apparently inland from the city) - so I think that is the telling difference.

I did what RDANE describes above, but also slightly (~1/4") increased the length of the crank arm so the single wiper sweeps closer to 180 degrees. I think it works great and no regrets.

How do you reverse the wiper? I am only going to run one wiper on my race car, and hate it right in front of me when parked.

I like my single wiper set up

I first drove with option #3 in a buddie's car. I thought it a little funky at first and had to be convinced. A few months of driving it in western WA winter weather and with a passenger in the rain gave it the OK.

Option #1 is still a very cool conversion. But it would have more than doubled the price of option #2 for me so I decided to passed.

The right way...option #1 :D Gotta be one of the most "finished" cars ever posted on Pelican.

944 single wiper conversion
 

Dragging up a very old thread here but I'm looking at doing the single wiper mod using the 944 rear wiper.

I don't know if anyone on here can help me as I have a couple of questions:

Firstly what orientation does the box fit under the scuttle panel? All of the photos I've seen show the wipers but don't really show the motor or mechanism.

Secondly, the 911 wiper motor has a connector with 5 x pins whereas the 944 has a connector with 3 x pins. Can anybody help with what needs to connect to what?

911 has: 53, 53b, 53i, 53a, 53e and 31

944 has: 53a, 53 and 31

Any help much appreciated!
