How long does it take to cool down.
 

Lets say you were idling for sometime and your temp gauge is reading at the 10:00 (240-250*F) position.

The traffic clears, all road kill scraped off the road and traffic begins to move at normal freeway speeds of 70mph, It's 90 degrees outside.

How long does it take before seeing the gauge drop because of the effect of motion and air flowing through the front fender cooler.

Your temps should come down noticably within about five minutes of steady movement and stabilize after 10 or 15. I haven't timed it but I have had a few stop and go's and that seems to be what I recall. The cooling takes place by higher revs and the fan cooling the engine as well as the oil cooler being air fed as you move. The front oil cooler is thermostatically controlled so if you are not seeing these time estimates and some noticable cooling you might want to check and see that the cooler is circulating oil.

I'd suggest adding a fan to the cooler. That will simulate the needed airflow at any vehicle speed.

Which brand do you suggest?

We've had 90+ temperatures here yesterday and I got stuck in two almost hour-long traffic congestions. The oil temperature crept up to 10 o'clock and stayed there until we got moving again. Then the temperatures came down after about 10 minutes to 9 o'clock, but never below. I think is entirely normal, and I would not invest in a fan to bring temperatures down five degrees.
I've never noticed before yesterday that the oil fill level shows considerably higher in such hot weather.

Spal has several units in a size that will fit. I think something around 5.5 - 6" will work, but check the archives for other installs.

Suggestion: Don't allow the engine to get too hot (>235-240ºF). It decreases its life.

my '74 has no aux oil cooler and for years has seen this scenario..temps occasionally bumping over 230 on the freeway with a/c on and in really hot conditions. if i were living in a situation with lots of stop and go, inner-city traffic i'd have to upgrade to an aux oil cooler with fan..absolutely no doubt in my mind..

P911cars is right. SPAL make a very nice slim unit that I just install on my car with when I replaced the trombone cooler. I also added a Hayden thermostat where the sensor slides in the radiator fin. It's adjustable, comes set to turn on at 220 and shut off at 160.

I'm telling ya "Cooler Scoop" is the way to go man!
As long as you are moving, the car will not go above 220 again.... And that will only happen if you are keeping speeds of 110 plus with A/C on in 110 degree weather...
If you are constantly getting stuck in traffic, go for an auxillary fan, as nothing can substitute for air flow to the cooler...

An occasional spike to 240 degrees is not critical if you are running a quality synthetic oil, but it does degrade the cooling capacity quicker... Hence, changing the oil more frequently might be a consideration...
