cat shield removal

I am installing a sport cat and new muffler. Trying to get the heat shield removed off old cat. The bolts are spinning, but there is no nut on the other side. I'm not familiar with the hardware on the other side. Bolt just spins but doesn't come loose. What is the trick?

They do have nuts on them, they are the slide on clip style speed nuts, chances are they have rotted away with just the actual nut part left on the bolt threads. Use a small pair of Vicegrips to hold the nut part. I had the same problem with one of them on the bottom side on my car when I was trying to remove the shield. I found the reason for the one to go bad, was that the bolt was a little too long and was actually touching the CAT, which caused extremely high temps to the threaded end of the bolt which made the hardware rust and fail with time, all the rest were OK, I obtained a new clip on speed nut, and trimmed a couple of mm of the new replacement bolt so it would not touch the CAT and used 2500 degree antisieze on all the bolts and all is well now, have had to remove it a few times since then and have had no more issues like that

I just did this job...Make it easy on yourself and cut the bolt head off.
