Outer CV Joint...FUBAR?

I found a torn outer CV boot on my left rear axle shaft. Upon removing the shaft, I found this...



Is this normal, or has it undergone some magical transformation?
If its not normal, any ideas as to what may have caused such an event?

This is one of the unfortunate results of a CV coming loose at the inboard end and flailing about. See if there is any damage to things the axle and inboard joint may have hit.

Hmmm, makes sense...
Grady, in your estimation should I replace the damaged part or just replace the boot and go on about my business? I have to disassemble that portion of the joint to replace the boot. I guess its just a matter of part availability. I didn't see the part in Pelican.

Paul,

You will need to replace the tin cover otherwise a new boot won’t seal properly. Without a good seal, the grease will get thrown out and the CV ruined from lack of lubrication. I would recommend you replace booth boots and carefully disassemble, clean, inspect, and re-lube the CVs. Pay particular attention to the cages, they can be cracked (broken in one place) but not separated. Did you have any noises like “snap” or “crack” or “pop”? No, not like Rice Crispies but much louder.
