about to swap my 74 for an 86

When I went to my mecanic yesterday, I saw this beautiful 86 3.2 standing there for sale.
I currently drive a Sahara Beige 1974 narrow coupe and I love it.
It's not perfect and could do with a respray, gearbox revision, new dash, and some other minor improvements. Which will cost me an few bucks (around 7000 US Dollars)
If I sell my current ride, I could go break even when I buy the other one. (black 3.2, perfect paint, 100.000 miles, very nice interior).
With some bad luck I'll have to sell it to the shop owner and add 5000 dollars to buy the other one. Which still is cheaper than restoring my current car.
To make a long story short: I have the oppertunity to upgrade to a more recent and overall better car but I'm having trouble saying goodbye to my beige beauty.
Advice is what I need from you, dear pelicanites.

Kind regards,
Geronimo

My current ride

This is the one I would like to buy

Geronimo,
Very interesting but why not spending your money on a decent, mort recent car, VW Polo or equivalent?

Dear TDJ,

you should be kicked off this forum for a bad joke like this.
But since you are my colleague and this is an attempt to pull my leg, I let you go, for now...

Hasta la Pasta, soepstengel,
G

A few years ago I swapped a 72, E engine targa, for an '86 Coupe and have never looked back and have no regrets!

Both are nice rides. You have to drive and decide-Classic vs. newer classic. They look the same but are so different that, to me, they are different cars altogether.

Decide on the long run: it sounds as if your '74 needs some work. The transmission alone, if it's no longer working properly, will set you back at least half of that $7,000 difference. If that's the case, I'd go for the newer car...if it is in good shape.

The general repeat advice you read from wiser guys than me will mostly all say get the newest car you can afford and don't look back. I have an 86 coupe in Guards Red and in my opinion it is the classic 911. These cars are solid and can take a pounding on the track. There is no shortage of available parts for them and they don't have a lot of electronic stuff making them difficult to work on. They certainly have their limitations as well but in my book they are a very affordable, reliable and fast.

The 86 will drive like a newer car. Personally, I like the way my 74 drives. It feels older and unique. Its lighter than the 86, possibly by a lot. A recent thread even detailed on the 2.7 feels "peppier" and builds revs quicker than the 3.2. Why not leave the dash and the paint, fix the tranny, and live with a nice 74? Chrome trim narrow bodies look classic, the 86 looks, well, newer.

I drove an 86 for 5 years. Now i have a 964. Next one will be an early 70's car.

If its a good car, and the deal makes sense, go for it
