my 'new' 1972 911T targa and my agony!!!
The PP forums are the best partner a Porsche owner can have!!! Thanks guys for all the advice for finding the right car. Special thanks to Christien L., Mike McD. and German Tim.
I have finally purchased a 1972 911T targa (black/black) that got a great PPI and has little to no rust. The PPI mechanic told me that he has not seen such a structurally solid early car in a while. The car is currently on the rail car in my hometown and will be delivered Monday. The wait is killing me!!! OLD pics of the car are at: http://www.picturetrail.com/911targa The car is in very good mechanical condition but is missing the MFI (replaced with solid Weber carbs, car recently tuned). It also has an A/C condenser and all the plumbing which has worked in the past year but has been taken off the car and is likely to remain off. The car definitely has some deficiencies. The major one is the tranny which is jimmy-rigged at the clutch cable entry point (bracket added) but still works fairly well with little/no grinding. Hopefully it will last and will be a WINTER project for me.... Otherwise: 1. the tint has to go 2. the seats need to be redone (or leatheriqued, we will see) 3. leaks some oil (oil return tubes, valve covers or at least new gaskets) 4. needs tensioner upgrade or at least collars (likely collars) 5. needs new tires and front pads 6. paint is 6-7/10 with some clearcoat problems (no bubbling AT ALL) 7. door pockets look like shiat and the speakers and stereo look gaudy 8. needs turbo tie rods, hotter cams and pistons, bored out to 2.7L, stainless steel brake lines, S-spoiler, roll cage, two/three tone paint job, etc., etc. - basically like Christien's car.... However, the car is basically stock and all the main stuff is great (no rust, engine, suspension, targa top, interior, no rust) and the price very reasonable given the current market and the car was exactly the colour/model I wanted. If you are interested in the actual price, PM me and I will tell you. FORGOT TO INCLUDE: ONLY 86 500 kms!!!! I will post pics Monday or Tuesday but until then I have to suffer without my baby!!!

Been waiting for news of the "arrival", so this is good to hear! Do you mean to say it's sitting in some rail yard in Toronto, but because they don't work on the weekends you have to wait until Monday? Man, that sucks. I say let's get a crowbar and go "liberate" it!! It's not really stealing, if it's paid for, right?

Great looking targa! you will really love it.
If you are going to bore the engine the webers may be a blessing in disguise. Its much easier to adapt them to a new hotrod motor than MFI. It is sad to see the MFI gone. FYI Porsche paint is typically single stage (no clear). Use a good cleaner and then wet sand, compond, polish and then wax. I bet all your paint problems will go away. If the car was repainted you need to find out details before proceeding.

Jamie, I hope it's original paint but I doubt it. The previous owner (not a easy guy to deal with, ask 911rs911r on early911sregistry.org) told me that the owner before him put a clearcoat on the car- whatever that statement is worth. I will definitely give her a good buffing (sounds dirty, n'est pas?) and see how she turns out.
I highly doubt I will modify the engine, I was just kidding on number 8. More like a wish list if I won the lottery. I already have my GF on my back about spending the dough on a 2nd car and she feels she is in competition with the car over my spare time (and money).....

No longer in agony!!!!! I picked her up tonight and she was everything I dreamed about. She looked great!!!! And more importantly drove great!!!
There still are some issues (see below) but overall the car is great and I AM EXTREMELY EXCITED!!!! Now the issues: 1. The tint didn't look so bad (it still needs to go but is not a priority); 2. the transmission grinded into 1st and reverse a few times (hopefully only a clutch adjustment); 3. The paint isn't perfect (raised clearcoat in multiple areas but unlikely rust) but is extremely good; 4. The interior is good minus the seats which need a refinishing but are really comfortable; The targa seals look blah but the targa top is fairly WATER TIGHT and comes off and goes on easily; 5. the radio isn't working and the subwoofer over the two rear seats needs ejecting! 6. Also, there are no rear belts, so I may leave that on for a while even though the rear seats are in good shape; 7. Tires are extremely tired but I knew that already; 8. The front pads are a danger to all other cars on the road; 9. I also think I jammed the front seat rake adjustment knob on the sport seats. I can't get her to move! 10. the seat belts suck and there are no seat belt receiver covers. Now that I got my complaints out of the way like a good Jew (oy-vahsmere!) I can enjoy my car! She is a beaut and I hope to have her ready for the FUN RUN on July 9!!!

From a fellow '72 owner, nice find! FWIW, those carbs sure look like Zeniths and not Webers, but if it runs fine, why sweat it?
Do a search on sport seats (esp. in the classifieds) and you might be amazed. ![]() Jim |
