Questions on amp installation in 964
 

Anyone has hooked up an external amp inside a 964? Where is the best place for locating one about 12 inch long by 10 inch wide by 2 inch thick.

I'm thinking that one may use the passenger footwell or right side of footwell. Or In the front luggage area inside the spare tire?

The issues with each choice:
1) mounting in passenger area needs a thick power wire from the battery (where does one route this through the bulkhead?)

2) mount in trunk needs RCA cables from preamp in passenger area to trunk (again where does one route this or the power wire)

My guess is there seems to be a rubber grommet/wire bundle going into the trunk behind the pedal cluster via the driver foot well area. Anyone can confirm how the pros or factory would route the wires?

You can do it either way. If your trying to go for more of a stealth look, most guys put them under the seats. In the trunk, guys usually build heavy MDF mounts and route the wires accordingly. You want to try to keep power and audio separate: power to one side, audio in the middle (or vise versa). Rubber grommet through bulkhead; easier to see with the carpet out. I did quite a bit of research when I was about to do this to my 89' but I got too used to listening to the music coming from the engine and ended up putting the thumper in my GTI :)

What's a MDF mount? Do you know how hot a modern Mosfet amp gets inside say the spare tire well (output of my amp is 65watts per channel or 130 watts total peak). Thanks for the info

Just a mount made from heavy plywood or MDF (fiberboard). Usually to show off the amp. I've always been into stealth installs so I don't usually get into that stuff; I don't want it seen. Anyway, a 2x64w amp can get pretty hot if your doggin it. I've run 50x4 for most of my life and you can barely touch them when you've been workin them. Shouldn't be an issue though; you could always add a fan to the mount later.

An MDF mount is a piece of MDF wood used as a mounting base for the amp. I had my Rockford Fosgate amp installed in the spare tire well. I did not use MDF, the installer used a thick piece of light weight plastic. I have not had any heat issues yet, but I haven't had it that long either. I am going on a long road trip soon; if I have any problems with heat, I will post them here.

Oh, I could not install an amp under my seat, because of size restrictions and my seat sits too low (Recaro Pole Positions).

I have two 600 watts amps in my '72 911. Both are under driver seat and passenger seat. Before that relocation they were installed in the trunk. The only problem in the trunk is that the cargo space is limited. If you use the trunk like me this will be a problem. If not, install the amps in the trunk.

MDF is very heavy but damps vibrations well; you can try plywood instead - it's lighter. paint it black if you want.
