LongAcre OR another Wide angle rear view mirror - QUESTIONS ADVICE
Is there a LONGACRE (bug eye windshield-mounted, rear view mirror) OR similar product that does not attach to the existing mirror (NOT a clip-on)? I'd like to find one that attaches to the Porsche mount (pictured below), which is directly attached the front Windshield.

any mirror that slips or clamps onto the oe mirror becomes a shaky mess on the track- been there/ done that. A convex race mirror sucks due to lack of depth perception if you want something that is effective- w/o drilling holes into the headliner. Then use a 5 panel wink - we've lined up the sunvisor screw holes on the driver side, then made a couple of support brackets off the center visor mount holes to stabilize it. The passenger side ends up with a fabbed bracket to the passenger side visor mount. Get all your adjustments done before you make the center mounts. I just love the view on street or track with the wink. I rarely need to use the outside mirrors. An added bonus is how inexpensive they are. Pep Boys carries them up here. The only caveat is to put a upper windshield tint or block off to keep the sun out of the resutling space between the mirror and the roof. |
how about one of these Wink Mirrors. These give you 300% more viewing angles than the existing oe.

One dissenting opinion: I have the snap-on wide-angle mirror and love it. The wink mirrors are great for track cars, but they're not easy on the eyes, and sooner or later they all start to rattle.
The wide-angle one has worked beautifully for me for a long time with no drama. I like it so much I leave it on for street driving. |
dat's why we have apples and oranges... it is mostly a matter of personal preference. The winks don't rattle when you support them properly. We have the seen the glass get loose- but nothing a little silicone glue doesn't handle
and , you have the added feature of seeing yourself grin like a fool when you just nailed an apex right! |

Back to Longacher. The ones I have looked at (bought one) have other types of brackets. Nothing for a stock glue-on mount. Most are for a roll bar member, but I assume they have others. The Longacher uses the brackets on the ends of the mirror housing, not the back. Again, that's what I have seen at the race shop where I buy such things.
Too close, and the Longacher gives too wide a field, unless you like seeing a LOT of yourself and even window net to your left. They don't help the blind spot; in fact, they make it slightly worse, IMHO. I haven't tried a wink type, so I can't comment. I find that the stock mirror does fairly well seeing any car following you. Once they have left the field of vision, they are somewhere in your driving line. But, you probably already knew that because you watched them close in on you. For a lot of track use with a lot of other cars with more or less open passing, the stock mirror would be insufficient. Otherwise, I can't see having something like a Longacher. I am willing to give the wink and Jack's deal a try when the time comes. I will not buy another Longacher. |
