Pertronix info for 76 2.7L

I have a 1976 2.7L with 40 IDA's and Bosch dist. I just tried to instal the Pertronix 1867 and it seems that it will not let the advance move as it is almost touching it? What Pertronix # have you used?
Below is a pic of the dist as I don't have the # with me. I'll pull it out after lunch and post what #'s I find. Also, will these grounded ignition wires work with MSD?

Any help would be greatly apreciated.
Geoff.

Since no one has replied I ground down the edge of the mounting bracket of the pertronix so it would allow enough room for the advance to move. It fired right up and idled smooth a check of the timing and I took it for a test run.
It now runs like crap! It feels the same as when the points are dirty (it feels like the spark is scattering or not enough spark) I only have a Bosch red coil with the pertronix and no CD or msd . Could this be a reason for tha bad running?

I have a 6al that I may instal but also need to know if the sheilded wires in the above pic (Beru) will work with a MSD.
Thanks.
Geoff.

Geoff,

I have a 6AL and pertronix on my 2.7L. I had to work to get the pertronix to slide down the dist shaft far enough to allow the rotor to seat correctly. I also have the ground straps on my wires with no problem. If your engine is not running well, double check your timing, your plug wires, and vacuum advance.

Wait! Did you say that you don't have a CD box hooked up? Just points and a coil? You cannot use the pertronix to replace the points if you do not have a CD box. The points ground the coil while they are closed, which allows the coil to build up a charge. When the points open, the charge is dumped through the plug wires to the spark plugs (a very simplified explanation). The pertronix is only a trigger for the CD box. They do not ever complete the circuit to ground, and will not allow the coil to build up a charge. The CD box allows the coil to build up a charge faster, that way it can supply multiple sparks at low RPM, and a stronger spark at high RPM than conventional points. When points are used with a CD box, the points act only as a trigger, they do not carry voltage through the coil to ground any more. That's why points last so long when used with a CD box.

Just hook up your MSD box - I can tell you how I hooked up mine. It's easy.

After reading more from pertronix, it looks like you can use it to replace the points. It must ground the coil electronically. Re-check your connections. I used the part number PE-1867.

Thanks Rex,
I'm going to instal the MSD tonite. The motor runs good up till aprox 3500-4000 RPM then it just seems to die off and I guess that there just isn't enough spark. The MSD works well in all my other cars so i'll give it a try in the Porsche Bus.

Thanks.
Geoff.

I can't believe it's running at all WITHOUT any CD box in there....

You can use the "grounded" wires with the MSD. I am using them w/ 6AL and have had no problems.

I instaled the MSD last night and what a difference! The motor came alive, now it's nice and crisp with no high RPM problems.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Guys.

If you want to see a few shots from the build up of the bus you can go to this link.

There are a bunch of broken links from the first updates when it was very rough. I'll get those fixed ASAP.
I'll post a few more finished shots in the next week or so.
Geoff.
