Would you put these on your 911?!?!?
Got this in an e-mail...I like the thinking anyway. I'm very curious as to how they "perform".
Radical New Tire design by Michelin Look, Ma, No air! Check these out. Thought you might like to see the next generation of tires. They had a pair at the Philadelphia Car show. Attached are pictures of the new Michelin tires. These tires are airless and are scheduled to be out on the market very soon. The bad news for law enforcement is that spike strips will not work on these tires. This is what great R&D will do and just think of the impact on existing technology: .. no more air valves .. no more air compressors at gas stations .. no more repair kits ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I think I read that they will include a sidewall, that they left it off for hype and flash. Still looks very interesting though

Will have to wait for the independent tests. When I first saw these, my initial reaction was that maybe a faux sidewall, although not required to hold air, would make the look more conventional, and palatable to the market. This config certainly highlights the technology.
I wonder how these would hold up in corner 13 @ Indy?

How would you vary the "pressure" to take into account the weight distribution issues of our cars?

The only problem for P-cars is that I read that one of the problems Michelin had during development was reducing the weight of the tire. As I see it, these tires will have all the weight of standard tires, plus the weight of the internal ribs where now there is only air.
However, I would put up with the increased rotating mass to eliminate the possibility of a catastrophic tire failure on the highway in the family SUV.

Well, that's the first I've seen or heard of them. I like them a lot. No sidewalls are fine with me . Less weight. Good qestion about the "pressures," but it looks like they are able to do something there that air pressure can't with the center supports. I don't know the engineering terms, but I can understand what I'm thinking. Air can only apply a uniform force on the inside of the tread. On that set up, a lot more varialbes are possible.
I'm sorry to see that the "rim" is a consumable though. Kinda takes away some of the individuality that we all covet. Since sftermarket wheels is such a huge industry, this concept will have to be thought through from the marketing perspective. I'd buy those today if they were ready for the public. |

Perhaps the cores are reusable? I like the concept, hopefully more than one company will be able to participate. The world does not need another TRX experiment...

i saw a piece on those on car and driver tv, they will have sidewalls, that car without them is just for demo purposes...seems like a good idea to me, i'm sure they will be very expensive at firt though
