Shift knob removal question

How do you get the shift knob off of the gear shift lever? Bentley says a wrench underneath then pop it off with a hammer? I would like to keep the original knob for later and this sounds a bit extreme. But it is definitely on there. Anybody know how to get this done with out destroying anything?
Thanks

Forget it. I went through the same thing putting my Momo on. Use either a hack saw or a dremel tool to cut it off. Put a cut accross the top, and try and create a hole you can get vice grips in. Then just tear it apart. I actually had to split the locking metal slip sleeve to get it off. Pain in the a$$. Whatever you do, put some tape around the shift lever to protect it.

Perhaps you will get lucky, but it seems most have to destroy the OEM knob getting it off....

They very rarely come off without breaking. Plan on replacing it.

Ater trying the 15mm spanner technique to no avail. I removed the shifter altogether (took about 5 minutes), clamped the shifter in a vice and was able to remove the knob very easily by hammering downwards!

Knob is unmarked...
