Changed radio - No AM reception? What's the small Blk wire on the antenna lead?
I just changed my radio head unit and when I turned it on everything was fine except no AM reception. It sounds like the antenna was not connected but it is, except for the small black wire that is sheathed with the antenna coax lead. I found this small black wire just dangling, not connected to anything. Is this the problem? Where does this wire connect to? I tried the old unit, same thing, lost the AM stations. What could be the problem???
I traced the antenna coax cable back to a small block where the black wire is also connected and there is a wire from the windshield that connects to the block also. Any help appreciated! |

You don't say what year car you have, but if it is an '84-89 Carrera that black wire is the power wire for the antenna amplifier. Hook it up to a power source and you will be good to go!

I had this same problem when I had an Alpine deck installed and as instructed by a Pelican, I hooked up that little black wire to a power source but still, no AM! Someone mentioned in a previous thread 'tuning the AM' via an adjustment screw on the deck - would a new Alpine CD/radio have this? My FM works great, but the AM is still non-existent - any way to trouble-shoot the antenna amplifier?
Regards,
