Exclamation * H4 headlight took OFF on right turn, need screw

The left H4 headlight departed the 911 yesterday.

Went for a fun run, exited the freeway, took a hard right, and off pops the headlight.

ClAnK, ting ting t-ting, scraaaaape...., launching onto the streets of Bellevue WA. So I hung a left and swooped in to grab the unit. Scratched lens, dented trim ring, crap.

*Is there any way to better secure these H4s to our 911s?*

BTW, that special screw is now adios.
Anyone have one to sell, ASAP?

Signed,
One-Eyed in Kirkland

I agree...the mounting sucks....

Maybe the top "lip" over which these hang (..to be pushed against the bottom using a screw)...can be made larger and more "meaty" ???

I have H1s and they pop off easily. I use a couple zip ties loosely attaching the adjuster mechanism to the fender. That way if it pops, at least it stays on the car.

Everybody should do this:

I think I have one of the fasteners you need, but I don't have the insert screw (although I'd guess that's the easy part). Is this it?

Hey Jack, what is the Porsche part number for that plastic retaining device?
Do these really pop out that easily? You would think that the engineers would have fixed that little problem.

Ironically, I lost two headlights this way -- before I went to fiberglass fenders. In my opinion, it's a design flaw.

I probably need a screw too, but I don't see an image here of the type of screw I need. I don't think Wayne allows those images here.

My screw did look different, Jack - but it is indeed the one that attaches the light to the bottom of the bucket. Do one of ya'll have one I can buy?

Great tip about securing the headlight to the car!

I just installed a pair. I find is hard to believe that your popped out like that. If the bottom screw is on tight, it shouldn't pop off. did the bolt to chasis break off or something? I have a couple of extra screws. Did you also use the trim ring with the inner screw that fits into the bottom screw that's anchored to the bucket? Send me an e-mail w/ you address or p.o. box. I'll give you my extra ones.

If you are referring to the trim ring screw at the bottom of the headlight assembly, then I have an extra one that you can have. Part# 911-631-146-01 Listed as trim ring screw (1974-1986). It works with my 1980 stock sealed beam lights. I'll attach a photo below. PM me you address and I'll drop it in the mail on Sat.

Carl 83911:
Even so...the top is connected by placing the top ring of the headlight assembly over a much-too-small "lip" of the car's headlight bucket....that if you lose grip there...allows everything to "fly" ....

Yes, I'm aware of the top lip. But if the bottom screw is tightly screwed into the anchor attached to the bucket, it shouldn't fly off (depending i guess on how fast you're driving at the time). I can expect some kind of rattle or something. Was the screw stripped?

The screw must have stripped from the force of the unit hopping off -
Carl, thanks for the screws! You have a PM

I lost one H1 while delivering my 911T to a new owner in AZ. Driving across the desert, stop to take a leak. Come out and there I am staring at blinky....There is a nice H1 sitting out in the desert between LA and Phoenix somewhere...

The beauty of the original headlight design was only skin deep.
