JB Weld & Heat Exchangers

I've got some small holes about the size of pencil lead appearing and was wondering if I could do a repair with JB Weld. Maybe Pyro Putty would be better? JB is good to about 600 degrees, I think.

I plan on replacing these with stainless pretty soon, but I'd like to put it off a little longer if I can. I know these are rusting out. Probably normal for it's age.

Thanks, Dave

Go with a higher temperature epoxy. E.g.

This will withstand the temperatures and should keep you rolling for a while. I have repaired cracks in exhaust manifolds with this stuff before and it held up great. You can order online at POR.

BTDT. It's not just the heat that you have to fight, it's the vibration and heat/cold cycles. It will less frustrating to dig a small hole in the back yard, throw a couple of 20's in it, and cover them up with dirt.

Save your money, and use the time you would have spent monkeying with this stuff on waxing your lug nuts or something similarly useful.

Thanks, George! I'll order some today and check out their other products, too.

Thom...a few bucks spent now will get me back behind the wheel.

Thom:

Only experience I have with the stuff is in large monlythic cast iron manifolds. It worked real well there. On a heat exchanger, your results may vary. Let Dave have a shot at it before he shells out the money for the SSI.

Cheers, George
