Headlights, is it watts or lumens that matter?

I have an '87 and just replaced the headlight bulbs with a set of new 80-100W bulbs, of course after adding the sucro relays. The old bulbs were PIAA with a slight blue tint, they were ok but I wanted more output. Problem I noted is the new bulbs aren't much inprovement, in fact they appear more yellow and dull compared to the 55-65W PIAA's. Non of the automotive bulb suppliers indicate how many lumens or output. It seems the new bulbs just consume more current and don't give any more light. I feel ripped off. Maybe Sylvania Silverstars would yield more light?

Lumens are what matters. The more the better.

Yes, lumens measure light output; watts is the unit of electrical (or other) power -- i.e. the input.

Do a search for headlight bulbs - Osram might be good for you.
People have posted long discussions of the best ones. (It ain't PIAA)...

Also check to be sure the wires & fuses are in good shape, not corroded, etc. and that the reflector is clean & shiny AND aimed correctly. Do not touch the surface of the new bulbs with your skin.

Finally, do you have H-4s?

See Daniel Stern's web site for all you ever wanted to know about automotive lightbulbs: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/bulbs.html
