915 rebuild update - pics
Well, I visited my mechanic today - he's got the 915 open and is inspecting it prior to putting it in my car. To clarify, this is a spare 915 I bought from Pelican member Rufblackbird. My plan was to get it rebuilt before bringing my car off the road for the trans swap. It'll be replacing a 915/49 (four speed).
It's a mag cased 915/44, with an 8:31 from a '76. ![]() ![]() The 'box was in surprisingly good condition. I expected it to need synchros and possibly a bearing or two, but everything seems to be well within spec. We're going to install new synchros anyway. ![]() The differential is in superb condition. He's stripped and now rebuilt the diff already, so it's just waiting on the rest of the trans. To my uneducated eye, there is now zero discernable slop/freeplay! When it's done and ready to install, the car will get a new clutch and we'll chase down some annoying items (oil cooler seals, t-stat o-ring, etc) and do another valve adjustment. I'm thinking about new polyurethane engine/trans mounts at the same time.
