Oil tank capacity, any changes over the years?
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if the capacity of later oil tanks (2.7 and 3.0’s) is the same as the early ones (2.0-2.4 ltr)? I had a 3.2 oil tank to go with my SS 3.2 motor but sold it as I did not link the oil filler neck and cap set up. I have access to an oil tank from a 2.2 but wondered if that would hold enough oil for the 3.2 motor? Any advice? Thanks in advance Alan.UK |

I found the answer to the capacity on an earlier post
"The difference in oil capacity is noted in the spec book: 9 liter oil change qty for '69-'71, and 10 liter oil change qty for '73-up cars." I have also read that the tank I have from a 2.2 is fine for a street car with a bit motor but not if it was for a track car. My car is a 95% street car, so I am hopng the early tank will be ok? Note also that the oil change capacity isn't the total oil capacity of the system or of the tank...
BTW - how much did you sell the 3.2L oil tank for?

Oil tank capacities were:
'64 - '71...9 liters '72 ..........8 liters '73 .........10.5 liters '74 - '84..11 liters '84 - '89..11 liters + 2 liters in the oil cooler & lines for 13 liter capacity

Alan,
The 2.2 and earlier tanks had smaller fittings and lines for the scavenge line than the '72 and later tanks ... so that would seem to rule out use on a 2.4 or larger engine. It would require cutting apart the early tank to replace the fitting and scavenge line that go to the oil filter mount. Jim, Per the spec book, '73 911S and RS 2.7 tanks are listed as 11.0/13.0 liter min/max system capacity ... same as '74 thru '89 models with front coolers.

Thanks for the advice. I have all the pipes and connections in the garage and I will try and connect them all up and see what happens. It seems like I should have kept the 3.2 tank I had (sold for £80).
If all the connections do connect up (or I can make them connect up) will the 2.2 tank be ok to hold the oil for a SS 3.2 motor, which also has a 3.2 front oil cooler? Thanks

Apparently the early sportomatic cars had a larger oil tank. Can anyone confirm this? I was told they had the same capacity as a 930 turbo oil tank. Did the 930 have a larger capacity than a 3.2?
