It has a few different names. Here's a thread with the info you seek: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/105652-fender-installation-putty.html?highlight=sealer

I'd think any auto body supply store will have.

EDIT: The black stuff in the pic may be something different.

Similar to what's used on my central air connections at home. Perhaps similar to this: http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?prod_id=300363&cm_mmc=1hd.com2msn-_-product_feed-_-D27X-_-300363&srccode=cii_9686437&cpncode=08-304008-2

Worth a trip to Home Depot and $4.98.

Thanks RickM, I've got some of that sealer strip and its great for all kinds of sealing. this black tape seems to have insulation qualiites ? almost asphaltish.. the PO removed it from the expansion valve and placed it over the old falling apart vent duct hose.. A new vent hose is on now, but this stick tape is all used up.

I added to my original post. I agree with it having insulation properties....

Seeeu911 where in Orlando are you? My winter project was R+Ring my AC system and I purchased a roll of prestite tape, you only need about 2 feet for the job and that's being liberal in application. Send me a PM and we can hook up and I'll give you 2 feet of the stuff. You can see my setup and maybe it will help you out. Let me know..............Rick

Hey, you still got that roll of the dumdum? Let me know and we can coordinate a time and place to meet. I'm in serious need of that stuff!

Actually it's called gum-gum tape ... we use it to do bagging repairs on composite structures. There's all kinds of applications for that stuff and similar products, i'm sure it's readily available by many sources.

That asphalty stuff on the expansion valve is a nightmare to remove once it's aged. Comes apart chunk by chunk with a razor and a scraper.

Hardware store near the window, door weatherstrip supplies, comes in a white roll.

your nearby FLAPS carries the black 3M brand window-weld ribbon sealer as its called.
I use this stuff to apply vapor barriers to the doors behind the door cards and also to seal up behind trim and under seals at what not. You can use it as a string or you can wad it up and make it whatever shape you want it to be.

You can also find it by searching for 'butyl rubber' or 'butyl tape'.

I bet shops, like the ones I have used, still call it "dum dum." I bought some from Porsche or as a Porsche part. It might be P/N 000 043 192 00, or some later replacement, which is called a sealing strap and goes under quarter window trim. Was a rather large (read a lot of this adhesive and malleable strip) roll, with blue thin plastic separating the continuous strips from each other.

Useful for filling gaps at the corners of the windshield, too.
