Ignition Switch?
Hi,
I started my car on Sunday after sitting for 9 months. Started on the first crank and idled perfect. Anyways, I ran around the block just to get the temps up and then shut down. I tried to start the car the next day and the car just cranked. I could smell the gas so I do not think it is gas related. Well, I went back inside the house and then tried again a few hours later. Car started right up and then after 10 sec it just died. No sputter or anything but just like the electricity had been turned off. I have had these problem in the past but they were so intermitent that I never really addressed it. The symptoms are, some times when I go to start the car, I just get a click, sometimes it cranks but doesn't start and the other times it starts fine. I have cleaned all the grounds (tranny, battery, wires coming off permatune) and have sent the permatune out to be checked from which it got a clean bill of health. My neighbor and I were just running through everything I have done and realized the one big thing that could be my problem is the ignition switch. The switch does have a bit of play. I think the key can actually be pulled out when the car is running. Now is it possible for the switch to sometimes juice the started motor but not the CDI or the CDI and not the started motor? Does it sound like it could be the culprit? Thanks, David |

My recommendation. Invest in a multimeter. Use that to verify source voltage is reaching the starter solenoid and ignition system.
The ign. switch sounds like a suspect part, but swapping out parts w/o proper diagnosis only ensures you get new parts, not necessarily the solution. Sherwood |

David, the mechanical part of the ignition is most likely not your problem. It could be the piggyback electrical switch on the back though. I think I have a spare electrical part if you want to try it. Phil
