Ignition Wires: Clewett vs. Magnecore
How do the Clewetts compare to Magnecore? Definite price difference ($130 for Clewetts vs $230 for Magnecores by our host). Also, heard the Magnecores are a pain to install (dizzy wire barely long enough, mounting brackets need to be drilled out to accomodate larger diameter, hard to press on connectors, etc.)
Any negatives regarding the Clewett's? My car is stock, so just need adequate spark. Plus they both come in RED, which is the real reason i want to change.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/newthread.php?s=&action=newthread&forumid=8# Mike '86 coupe |

I have found Magnecore's for $110.15 8mm blue wires and $142.90 8.5 mm red, I don't hink you would have to drill out the mounting brackets if you use the 8 mm blue wires

For most OEM applications they use a split sleeve loom to protect the cables.

Clewetts are fine. I don't think there's much quality difference if any.

I just installed the Magnecors this morning and did not encounter any of the problems about fit I have read here on the forum. Just listen for the "click" and remember the plugs are at a slight angle to the valve covers. Everything went very smoothly. I did drill out the wire separators and it only took about 3 minutes to do all of them. Connect the separators back together and hold in a bench vice. Drill out for K85's to 8.0mm. It was easy!!!

A little "creative" routing needed to get Magnecor's (12) plug & (2) coil wires attached to the 993 distributor, as space is tight but not that big a deal. The Magnecor's are worth any extra effort IMO. Ralph |

You can use the stock Beru wire separators. Just spray lubricant like WD-40 on the 8.5mm cables that you will buy and inside the separators and they will slide. This is what I do to my 911. I use MSD 8.5mm cables with the stock Beru spark plug wire separators.

On a stock 3.2 with AC, what parts do i need to remove (if any) before i can access/replace the ignition wires? Are long, double jointed, skinny arms needed, or will i spend most of the time removing stuff, just to gain access to the spark plugs?
thanks mike

Mike, I just did this and it helps to remove the long S shaped plastic duct from the heat blower fan on the left side. On the right side just remove the A/C compressor which takes all of 2 minutes to do. Just lay the compressor on the rear fender and put a cushy thick towel on the fender first obviously. Then just take your time.
I went with the 8mm Magnecor's and routed them myself without the stock Beru holders. The engine bay looks a bit crisper without the Beru holders IMHO. The Magnecor's are superior in construction and fit next to the Clewetts. I did a ton of research before I bought them at http://www.apexperformance.net/cartgenie/hotdeals.asp Good luck

I put the Clewetts on my 79' SC. I was having problems with the plugs sealing to the valve covers. The car ran poorly, but come to find out I was sent the wrong plugs. I actually talked to Richard Clewett himself during the ordeal. Great support.

Mike, thanks for the compliment. I just finished quite a bit of work on the car and cleaning up the engine bay was one of them. My girlfriend's an artist and she airbrushed the CARRERA on the alt housing strap which was now available to do so after i tossed the Beru wires and holders. I think the bay looks so much nicer without the Beru stuff on it.
One of the things I did wqas to powder coat the Alt fan and housing and it came out sweet. My girl matched the housing color for the lettering and then slightly highlighted the tops of the letters with a whitish frost. She made her own stencil after I gave her the classic carrera lettering and I think it came out awesome as well. It added a personal touch to the car and made it unique. Thanks again for the compliment, she'll be happy to hear it. Oh and Ed by the way the 8mm Magnecors I purchased were $119. Our sponsor has the 8.5mm for over $200, way overpriced. Nothing wrong with saving money and this forum informs you of the best deals around which is why it's so great. Pelican has plenty of competitively priced items and I purchase from them often but you have to keep em honest. Gordon
