A little OT. But need answers.
My friend has A 63 356 SC . Been stored for 15 years. It's in very good condition until yestarday. A elderly women was pulling out of her driveway across the street . She herd a noise and thought she hit a pedestrian. In a panic she stepped on the gas insted of the brake, Ran clean into my friends garage.Pushed a steel roll down door onto the car and then sent the car flying throught the front wall, with the spare motor, trans, susp.Car landed about 30 yards into another back yard.Deck lid sheered the metal by the quarter windows.also has front damage. How much is the car worth before the accident? What should he do?

Has the car been hidden in Middle Village all these years?
Im not sure where a car could take a clear 30 yard leap in Midlde Village So the steel roll down door lands on the car and it pushed out the garage via impact with it spare motor ,trans, susp. PRICELESS |
First if it is a ’63, it isn’t an SC. SCs are ’64-’65. The VIN will tell.
Hopefully he continued to carry comprehensive coverage even if the car wasn’t being driven. Most homeowners policies exclude any vehicles. Of course he needs all the insurance coverage for the lady and vehicle that caused the problem. He should get an attorney’s advice. Some states have “no fault” laws that might leave him out in the cold. As far as documenting the loss it is like any other car. Start with the cost of a proper repair. He also needs to find comparable “like kind and quality” and document their value. A ’63 S90 or ‘64SC should be easy to find at VERY high prices. The other aspect is “diminished value” because of damage to previously undamaged car or parts. I am not an attorney and this is not legal advice. I have stayed in a Holliday Inn Express. An unusual situation, no doubt. The lady's insurance will cover the damage to the house and contents. They will consider the car junk. Basically, I'd divide this into two separate deals: the house and the car. Settle the house thing as you would and let them offer you what they will on the car. Don't accept a one-check settlement. In fact, they will probably have the connections to get the house fixed. The type of work done by insurance contractors sometimes ain't that bad. But, that's another story for another forum.
On the car: You will need a professional appraisal and expect to go to court suing for the full amount of the appraisal. If you work it well, you may get close to the appraised amount plus attorney's fees. Be very careful as you go and don't let it get out of hand at any point. Things like this often do. Grady is right about the car not being covered by the homeowners insurance. But, HE is not filing a claim with HIS company. SHE pays through her company and all damages are subject to reimbursement. Then, there's the deal about trying to buy it back, if he wants it. This one ain't gonna be easy. |
Tim T, trust me ,I helped push it BACK into the garage. OVER A 1 foot drop. There are cars still hidden in this area.
Grady, I dont know about 356's and niether does the owner. Zeke, I told him to get it appriased before talking to any insurance people. WHAT IS THE CAR WORTH? |
30 yards? I'm sure you meant 30 feet .
|
The car was 30 yards, everything else was scattered, Good thing no one was behind the garage. The motor went 20 feet from the back of the garage!

Holy schnikies!!!

Its us old folks. In May, I was near by when an old guy, (3 decades older than me) lost control and managed to hit three parked vehicles and rear-end another before coming to a halt. (You would be amazed at the amount of vertical travel in a car's suspension when it impacts something.) Turns out he had a stroke. No charges were laid. He died a few weeks ago.
Be careful of old folks in Crown Vics. Les |
30 yards? That's 90 feet! AFTER being punted THROUGH a wall.
Car had to be in neutral and rolled down a hill. 90 feet's a lot from just the inertia of the hit. |
I'd sure like to see a pic or two of this doosie! Good luck with everything...
