fiberglass hoods

I'm pretty bummed about the hood on my '66 912. While she was sleeping on a weekend night wearing a nightgown car cover, someone in my college community of UCSB I suppose decided to take a seat right in the middle of the hood. Nearly the entire hood dented in. I popped it back out with minimal difficulty, however, the paint cracked quite badly following parts of the dent. Young and naive, I took no immediate action and the cracks rusted out very quickly.(I live across the street from the beach) So now I'm thinking it might be a good time to lose a little weight. The RSR fiberglass hood on GT-Racing's website claims 13 lbs to the stock 42 lbs. Does anyone have any experience with fit or quality of this product? Price is listed at $425.. poor college kid and money is unfortunately a factor. But I'd like to know if there are any other products out there that one might recommend. Thanks for any advie. Keep your cars out of the path of destuctive drunk college kids. Happy Thursday.

Unles you plan to do track events, why not get a used hood from EASY or PartsHeaven?

It saves a lot of lbs. -- is the ins. co. paying for this? used saves a lot of $$; repair might save more...

Didn't know slugs were that heavy...

Is it really rusted through already, or are you just in need of having your own hood stripped and blasted and repainted?

If you search for deck lod + Bill Verburg, me & island you will them giving me some tips on how FG engine lids (flat, non-duck) warp a lot more than CF ones. Of course the latter are much more spendy...

A custom made Al one may be out of your range but that is what the factory uses to lose wt. A guy advertises in Pano - I called him & he says he can make "any body part" out of Al -- for a price I expect.
