Want to paint-prep my car

I've spent the first three years of ownership gettting my car up and running, and making it mechanically sound. Now I'm ready to tackle the paint job.

It was originally silver & repainted the same color by some knucklehead who had no business holding a paint gun. It has lots of runs & blisters and even some spots where he misssed completely and the original paint shows through. I"ve had thoughts of trying to shoot the paint myself, but have no experience, and don't want to make the same mistakes as the previous knucklehead. Also don't want to buy all that equipment.

So, I'm planning to do all the prep work myself (something I do have some experience with) and having a professional shoot the paint for me (same color).

What I'm not sure about is what to to with spots where I'm going to have to take it down to bare metal. I get the impression that there are no decent rattle-can primers out there, and I'll be working too slowly to leave the metal unpainted. Also, the current top coat is enamel. Does that mean I'm stuck with enamel for my paint job?

Thanks.

I would use a quality rattle can primer to coat temporarily. Remember most primers are porous so no matter which you use it's temporary.

That said, I'd eave the fianl sanding and primer application up to the tech who's goiung to spray color. He shpuld be using products that are made to be used together.
