rear view mirror
I am working through the list of things to fix on my new Porsche and I have found this list’s archives to be a great resource. But I have a question that I can’t find the answer for in either the archives or the Bentley manual, (Wayne’s book is on order). How do you remove the rear view mirror from the windshield mount on a 1987 Targa? I looked for a set screw of some type but don't see any.

It's held on with a little pad that's sticky on both sides. Heating it up will work, but it's a fine line between softening the glue and breaking the glass.

I think you are referring to the mounting bracket that attaches to the windshield. I want to leave the mounting bracket in place and just remove the mirror. It looks like the mirror slides on to the bracket but it must lock into place some how. I just don’t want to crack the windshield trying to take the rear view mirror off.

Rear View Mirror.......
RBS,
If you decide to remove the mirrow bracket from the windshield, it's very simple. Use a heat gun and slowly heat the contact area (bracket to windshield). Be patient and do not over heat it. Use a razor blade to pry the bracket. Done this a couple of times and takes about 2 to 3 mins. to complete the job. TD |

Rear View Mirror.....
Crazy glue will keep your rear view mirror in place. Word of advise: Use a mark pen to find the correct location before applying the glue. And put some duct tape to keep the rear view mirror from moving during the drying period.

I found out the mirror can be removed by pushing up on the mirror base were it connects to the windshield. Wiggling the mirror to get it to move can cause the windshield to crack. In fact, Porsche windshields come from the factory with the mounting base already installed.
