Rear wheel bearing source needed

Hi Gang

I have been reading some prior threads on wheel bearing failures and sources for different bearings. I have been chasing a problem on my car for a couple of years. I have replaced banana arms, machined them to bring the bore back into spec, added large metal rings (in place of e-brake set-up) to add strength etc. My car is an 84 and only used for track (DE and a little vintage). My parts sources (Westex and SSF) both send the same bearing SKF 305988D. Last summer I bought a pair though the Porsche dealer, they were exactly the same numbers, different box and 2x price, as my suppliers. I noticed on a prior thread that someone used a p/n SKF 309609ad, and someone included a photo of a bearing made in Italy. I need to find better quality/durability bearings. Any help finding a source would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've got a pair of rear wheel bearings sitting here, recently purchased from our host. SKF, # 305988D, made in Spain. Unless this bearing also fits something else, I doubt if you're going to find anything better. Any chance you're damaging them when installing?

I think Jerry was asking for help in relation to brands and opinions... I suspect he knows where to buy them

The originals in my car were FAG, and I had a choice of Timmken (sp) or SKF to replace them. I went with the SKF and no problems so far. The threads I read flagged a possible issue with outer diameters of the various brands (we're talking fractions). I also used a bearing retainer compound to be sure.

I have been replacing these wheel bearings for a number of years, on many different 911's. I have all of the correct tools. I am confident I am doing them correctly. That said, the units from SKF (305998D) just do not hold up to the strain on the track using Michelin Sport Cups, or Hoosier racing slicks. I am looking for a bearing that has proven to hold up better than the "Spain" version. I am very leary of just ordering replacement because 3 different sources have sent me the 305998D, and now you say PP sells the same. Hoping that someone has a source.

Thanks and keep the info coming

I have no hard experience on this so

afaik, based on a BusinessWeek article, the Timkin Brg mfg spends the most on R&D, has the most expensive facilities, etc, and produces the finest bearing in the world.

I also got a heads up from a bearing pro, that was visiting this site, when I asked him about my info. He said that on your street car SKF is good enough.

I may be able to search his name if you need it later and get his view on a track car ?

also fwiw, is this issue due to grease failure ?

I went to college (Crass Western Perverse Univ. -- aka "Case") with a Timkin offspring and ... they are very proud of their bearings.
