Red face HOLY SMOKES!!! Fire hazard- SC and Carrera owners.

I was reading the Sep. issue of Excellence I just received and came across Jim Pasha's article in the Tech. Forum (p.172.). It seems that some of the wires for the glove box lamp are too close to the bulb. One owner had the insulation melt causing a short, melting his wiring harness. I checked my own cars- the SC was OK, but sure enough, the Carrera had a loop of wire touching the glove box bulb (which gets very hot, BTW). I simply moved it out of the way and reinstalled.

True enough Sammy. This might be the reason.

that same harness fries when the disconnected trunk light wire touches ground below the right hinge. not many people tape the end, and leave it hanging.

Don't forget the famous front condenser motor harness that melts and short if the condenser motor is frozen.

yeh - I saw that - it makes you want to throttle the moron who designed the elec. system for our cars.

Now - does this only affect teh 3 & 3.2L cars? Or does it affect any others?

This is a good thread to compile all the previous very important elec. fixes for our cars.

It might seem like a funny question, Russ, but Halon won't help much with an electrical fire due when a short circuit is present in an unfused power lead! Ever hear of the Brown's Ferry nuclear power plant fire in the control circuits???

This article struck home with me after having already replaced one wiring harness. Huge PITA and very $$$. Warren is again correct- by the time you smell it, you're fried.

It's pretty scary. Back about 15 years ago I had spent 10k on a complete strip/paint and 3.0 conversion on my 75 S.

That same harness shorted out on the ash tray or radio light. I can see the wire starting to glow red and the smoke started to pour out.

I was lucky I was on a 2 lane road with no traffic. So I could shut the car off. Man do you feel helpless.

I put a 7.5 amp fuse on my front condenser blower just in case it tries to melt down. Got the tip on this board.
