Engine mount missing!

So I finally get to investigating why my "new" '72T looks crooked from the back and I find that the left rear engine mount is unhooked and missing any nut or washer that used to be on the bottom!! Obviously, she's gonna stay off the road 'til I fix it, but I'm worried about the possibility that I damaged something else. I've put about 700 miles on the car since I bought it 3 weeks ago, and God knows how long it was like this before I bought it!

Also, which mounts are recommended for replacement for a non-racing, no autocross car? How many mounts are there? Where can I get the bolts and other hardware I'll need?

Thanks much,

Check with our host here.

Are you sure that you don't have one of the 'later' mounts (i.e. one that doesn't use a nut on the bottom...the bolts screw into the crossmember)? Did you get a PPI?

wahoofan 07-12-2005 11:00 AM

No PPI - I didn't feel it needed one for the price and the way the car drove and looked. I don't think it is a later mount; the one on the other side has a nut. Are there only two mounts that I will need to change?

man and it didn't shift a little strange? It's an easy fix. A floor jack and big socket and you're in. Do them both and use the sport mounts. Better check those trans mount bolts while you're under there. Sounds to me like somebody did an engine drop and didn't tighten things properly.

Hey ..you must be from Cleveland. When I lived there it was fashionable to only use one motor mount. ;-)

wahoofan 07-12-2005 02:27 PM

LOL - Not Cleveland, but close.........Canton. Do the sport mounts come with all the hardware(bolts, nuts, washers) or will I need to buy them seperately? I am actually missing one set!!

targa911S 07-12-2005 02:35 PM

washers yes. bolts no. Make sure the washers are installed curved side up, like a dish. Of couse the bottom ones would be curved side down. I'm sure our host has them. if not Stoddard is up there and they would have them(bring lots of money). Has it stopped snowing there yet? I'll be moving back in the spring. Seriously check the trans mount bolts too. I had my trans held up by the sway bar after the bozo that did my gearbox didn't tighten them enough. They look like the motor mounts.

Thanks to all for the help. I temporarily fixed my mount by getting a new bolt and nut and some rubber washers from Home Depot. WOW.....what a difference!! I thought my car was loud , rough, and shifted poorly just because it was so old! Even with this "homemade" bushing and mount it drives like a dream compared to before. I'll bet this is why the guy I bought it from sold it for a low price ($9000) !

Home Depot??? man I love a guy with a sense of engineering. Yeah i bet it feels like a whole new car. I'm tellin' ya. "sport mounts". Do your shift bushings while you're at it. That old 901 gearbox will feel brand new.
