Oil level?

This is a stupid question but, what is the ideal oil reading on the dip stick of my 84 3.2 Carrera? I'm lookung at the dip stick. About and inch up I see two stamped dots side by side. About four inchs up another two dots. Do I want the oil level in the middle of the dots?

Yes, car on level ground, running and fully warmed up.

As scott said, make sure the car is running & fully warmed up to
operating temperature or the reading will be low. There is
about a two quart difference between the two markers
(at least it is on my '87), so when you are near the bottom
marker you are about a quart low, and should add a quart
then.

And do not try to keep the oil at the full mark, it will just keep burning the oil down. Just let the car find the level it's happy at, on my car it's at the halfway point between full and add. If I fill it to the top it will just burn it right down to the halfway point and stop. Of course don't let it get below the bottom marks....

As Scott said...Make sure the car is FULLY warmed up.

On my car, I like to warm it up until I hear the front oil cooler turn on (all the oil is now circulating)

On your '84, I suspect that you do not have the factory cooler but; you should be able to feel the lines getting hot up under the front fender.

Then I look at the dip stick and bring the oil up to the proper level.

I changed over to a Euro premuffler last Winter, and my car has been smoking a lot more since. I understand from other threads that the cat will burn off some oil, which explains why it seems i'm getting more smoke now.

What I've noticed though, is if I let the oil level get to the min mark on the dipstick, it barely smokes at all. If I fill to 1/2 way, it smokes quite a bit until warm.

So my question is, try to keep the oil level at the min mark and reduce the smoking, or keep the oil around 1/2 way and create a HUGE blue cloud on start-up?

Best Regards,
Daryl
