All Original Car - Will AfterMarket Parts really reduce value??
Have an all original 84 targa coral red.
Wondering if the addition of turbo tie rods, wiper motor, radio, speakers, antenna, etc will decrease the value or authenticity. Or should I look to recondition the original parts... I know this is a purist question but this is a love affair for long term value.... Thoughts??/

Unless you are going to show your car at concours the changes you mention will not effect the value at all.

I'd have no problems changing the tie-rods, wiper motor and radio (keep the original) but I'd personally be slow to drill holes in body or interior panels for speakers or antenna!
But I'm sure Kurt is right, unless the car is absolutely concours it won't affect the value. |

Yes i've kept all the original parts. Absolutely no drilling. Although the dealer where the car came over to in CA installed an amp in the trunk and tweaters in the front doors. I've upgraded the rear deck speakers - no cutting - raised the deck panel by 1 inch. Still have the blaupunkt (sp?) radio for recondition.
I'd still have some work to do for concourse, but now with the age of the car I'm split with installing the tie rods vs reconditioning the seals on the originals....

i used to be concerned about the same thing. hang here for a while and you will be cured. you dont have to go gruppe b and break out the sawz-all, but there are things that you will find that will increase the value of car to YOU. who should value the car more than you, nobody.
additionally there are alot of 84's out there, so have fun with it.. my 78 had 63K miles on it when i got it 4 years ago, it is still a garage queen, just with better suspension, cleaner engine bay due to backdated heat and AC removal, and a ton of other things that increased the value of the car in my eyes, the end user of the thing. cant wait to do exhaust after my next smogging.

I see nothing that would affect the value. Especially if you keep the original parts. I assume your '84 still has the fender based antenna.

113K miles, yes original fender antenna.
Can tie rods be reconditioned to keep originality or do they face structural integrity issues?

A stock car sucks - (and I quote Mikez on this...) and you can't compare stock carrera tie rods vs turbo tie rods - turbo is a 300% improvement.
At 113K miles - have fun with it and make it yours - if it was 13K miles - I might be more inclined to say - keep it original for the Porsche museum... May I also recommend a sport exhaust, new wheel, 7's ad 8's fuchs (or 8's and 9's) with new rubber and steve wong chip. That's a good start...

I concur with Jeremy. At 113k its a daily driver not concourse. You are probably talking about a $12-$14k car. If anything turbo tie rods would make it more valuable (I would do it to my daily driver.. so if a car has it already it is just more appealing to me).
And a stock car sucks... Get alluminium floorboards, RS door panels, Momo steering wheels, sport exhaust, sport Koni (Bliesteins), Weltmeister strut bar, Steve Wong chip, and everything Jeremy said. |

The turbo tie rods shouldn't affect even the concours viability IMHO, to me it is a no brainer update just like the carrera tensioner. If it does affect the concours viability then that tells you more about the wine and cheese crowd than anything else. 99% of knowledgable Porsche people will consider it an asset.

If you are concerned about resale value or money in general, sell the car and rely on public transportation.

It's not like you have the first '67 S they made or something. I wouldn't worry about it. Save the old parts if you are concerned.
Another factor to consider is _what_ aftermarket parts are involved. All will agree that a crappy neon license plate light is not the same as a Wevo or SRP part. |

Thanks for the responses. Since first posting I've come to recognize that the turbo tie rods would be an asset to the knowledgeable market. As a 'purist' though I am hesitant to add aftermarket goodies. When I see a momo steering wheel on a car I'm interested in I think 'cheap' someone 'beats' on the car. Doing more on these cars it becomes apparent the cosmetic quick fixes or quick adds versus the well thought out upgrades. But it does bring out another point - do aftermarket chips decrease engine longevity? Anyone have a testimonial for a performance chip or a distributorless ignition system.

Upgrading with Porsche parts is almost always a WIN for you and your car. Turbo tie rods, Bilsteins, larger Fuchs, Sport seats etc. Aftermarket stuff? Hit and miss if you ask me. I have a SW chip in mine and it is still screaming along at 171k ![]() -Chris

I'd rather have a car that is driven, even spirited, than a car that sits up with the original wheel in place. A steering wheel is changed back to original in 10 minutes. A no brainer. If you want to sell the car, just throw the orginal wheel back and sell the momo. It will be the best of both worlds! You won't feel like driving a school bus if you havea momo wheel and your original steering wheel will be beautiful when it comes out of storage!
IMHO chips do not reduce lifetime. Do a search on Wong and chip, you'll find a lot of info. He is on the board and can program a chip to fit your car and your liking. George |

I only put German air in my tires. It's a pain in the ass to go to the airport and wait for Lufthansa to pull in, but the performance is well worth it!

I think it hurts the value of your car if you haven't done the generally accepted upgrades! Tensioners, tie rods, etc.
