More (longhood) pedal cluster questions

With the recent woes I had had with my throttle, I have come across several other questions and issues with my pedal cluster. First thing I noticed is that my clutch pedal is a little sloppy on the release, but then I noticed this:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1121665932.jpg

It looks like a boss with a detent for a spring, with a matching one at the back of the pedal cluster. Am I missing some sort of clutch pedal return spring on my car?

The next issue has to do with the brake light microswitch. Is this what it is supposed to look like?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1121666064.jpg

My washer that the switch actuates off of is pretty ghetto at this point. Is it supposed to be so flimsy? Is there an easy way to replace it?

Thanks again.

don't know about the brake light i have a RHD car and the set up is a little different. But you sure are missing your clutch return spring it's a real PITA to replace.

Watch out for your fingers..

Ask me how i know

Nice job Steve!

Interesting, neither of my 71 cars have a clutch return spring. They do not even have the extension on the clutch cable arm to hold one. I have never noticed any sluggishness in return.

None of those photos show a '71 cluster. The correct cluster has a different design clutch pedal and no spring.

Steve, thanks for the pic!

I do notice that your throttle arm is significantly bent outward. This can come from a misadjusted throttle stop on the floorboard, which puts torque stress on the arm. If it bends enough, the throttle arm can stick under the firewall when you try to decelerate, resulting in a stuck pedal at WOT. Ask me how I know... :( That's the reason I am here today.

My '71 has the return spring. The pedal box is original, I'm quite sure. Just rebuilt it a few weeks ago. It is a B*tch to replace in the car. If you are rebuilding, may as well install the spring out of the car. My washer is just as flimsy. You easily buy another washer from the hardware store. It is about 10mm ID.

Sorry--let me clarify: the early -73 cluster has the clutch return spring on the right side. The 74- cluster has the clutch return spring on the pedal arm itself.

Again: if you have a 2-piece clutch pedal arm, it's an early cluster. If you have a 1-piece clutch pedal arm (as shown above) it's a 74- cluster.

Here's a pic of the -73 cluster from the Pelican tech article:

Where did you get that diagram? Is that what the PET looked like before they digitized it or is it from something else?

This is definitely what I need, but now I am confused by references to the 2-piece clutch pedal. My car seems to have the one piece as does Steve's. To top it off, my PET shows the '69 as having the two piece pedal, as well. Is my cluster not original? If it is not original, is it the '74+ cluster?

Is it possible you have a late clutch pedal arm on an early shaft (with the spring on the right side and the "bent" lever on the right)? Since it's pretty likely that a 30+ year old pedal cluster's been rebuilt, you may have mix-and-match parts. I have a weird hybrid myself, using early cluster with a later shaft. Rebuilding it correctly is a future project...

kenikh 07-18-2005 08:51 AM

Possible. If my memory serves me correctly, though, there is a boss for the clutch return spring on the cluster base, correct? My base does indeed have the boss. After looking at the PET for a '77, it appears likely I have a later unit.

The pic I posted isn't from my car but shows the newer style pretty well. My 71 has the early style without the big spring on the left. I have a pedal set from a 76(?) that looks like the one in the photo. The spring was missing on that pedal set, but it was from a scrap yard, so it may have been taken.

kenikh 07-18-2005 09:58 AM

OK, so if I have the later cluster, how do I know which one? Apparently there are different springs for '74-'76:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1121705915.jpg

and for '77-'89:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...1142330506.JPG

What is the differnce other than the price?

Clutch Pedal Return Spring, 911 (1974-76) C-423-305-05 $20.70
Clutch Pedal Spring, 911 (1977-89) C-423-305-06 $7.80

kenikh 07-18-2005 10:56 AM

The only difference looks like the finish; I took a chance and ordered the later (cheaper) one from Pelican today.

Sorry to barge in on the thread but I had a pedal cluster question that is relevant to this discussion.

My accelerator pedal/throttle sticks about 1/4 down so I was about to take it apart and replace the bushings and give it a solid lube job. After removing the floorboard and cleaning out the debris behind it, I found the piece circled in the pic on the floor:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1121805754.jpg

My brakes and clutch work fine (I prefer not to mess with 'em) as do the brake lights. Any idea as to what is that piece and what does it do?

jpnovak 07-19-2005 01:48 PM

that is only a pedal return stop. There is a small rubber section that prevents them from going clunk on return. The stop is bolted to the side of the pedal cluster base and acts as a guide tube for the clutch pedal arm to ride through and the brake pedal arm to ride on. I don't see how it could be laying on the floor unless you had pedal cluster failure.

kenikh 07-19-2005 01:48 PM

Pretty sure it's just a rubber stop (pad) for the return of the pedal so it doesn't hit metal on metal.

(edit) looks like Jamie and I answered at the same time.
