seine systems gate shifter Q - yellow spring = short shifter OR??
I blueprinted my 915 shifter yesterday and meiculously followed the instructions to install the gate shift kit. It works very well, but I've been rethinking my install and wanted to make sure I had things right.......
Here's my question: When I installed the red spring, it bound up before I reached the 1 / 2 gate. The spring was too long. The shift pin was too close to the tension bolt retainer. I installed the yellow one (shorter), and things were all good. I only could draw two conclusions: 1. Is there a chance I have the shift fork installed upside down? 2. I had a aftermarket or factory-market short shift arm without even knowing it? I did check that the nylong shifter bushing drops all the way into the cup at the shift rod. Seems like if the fork were upside down the bushing wouldn't drop all the way into the cup (OR maybe too far)? Thanks a bunch, Doug

Wanted to clarify two things:
First the shifter would not reach the 1 / 2 gate with the longer spring installed. When I moved in that direction, the spring bound up. Second, I should mention that my shifter is from an 1986 Carrera, so it has the one piece fork. The schematic at seinesytem's website is for the earlier styel, two piece fork. Thanks again, Doug

iirc, the carrea is a factory short shift. or at least shorter than the ones from 72-83. the instructions from seine state that the arched hole in the side of the housing has to be raised by filing to allow for extra travel. hth, doug, we have the email thing going, too. i'm just limited on what i can do until i get new keyboard. i learned this morning that a soda was spilled on it last night by my wife. no biggie.

Zeke,
Thanks for all of your help. You clarified one question, 100% well actually, the second one, as well. Here's the conclusion: 1. The shift fork is symmetric, up and down are identical so either is just fine. 2. I didn't know the Carrera shifter is a short shift. That makes sense. The change in ratios of the shift lever would move things about a bit. That would change the relationship of the shift pin to the top of the shift housing, hence the tension spring retainer mechanism (Seine component) and finally cause my longer spring to bind up. Thanks again..... Doug Again, I'm very happy with how this mechanism is working, but just wanted to find out why it wasn't set up the way I anticipated. Running the yellow spring is working perfectly for me.

Doug,
I'm glad your car is operational with the Gate Shift kit, so this doesn't sound like an emergency. FYI. '85-'86 Carreras were factory-equipped with what is referred to as the factory semi-short shifter (FSeS - part no. 911.424.017.10). The full factory short shifter (FSS - part no. 911.924.931.00) was also an option in these years (M241), part of the 911SC/RS program. Zeke is correct. Your car may have been equipped with the optional factory short shift kit. The proper fit of the yellow-coded spring confirms it. More info here. The above linked page describes the FSeS but doesn't show that lever. Here's a pic of an earlier shift housing (~'77) upgraded with the Gate Shift kit and a factory short shifter. Note the elongated access hole Zeke described in his post. Funny you didn't mention lengthening the slot in your housing. ![]() Regards, Sherwood Seine Systems |

Doug and I shared a couple of emails earlier while I was having some keyboard issues (they don't work too well with Diet Pepsi all over, do they?) He did cut the arched hole to make it higher.

Zeke-
Thanks again for your early and spot-on response. Sherwood- I should have mentioned the elongated slot, though I did say I followed the instructions meticulously (which said for later shift housings to make the alteration.) The spring coils stacked up, but hitting the housing itself was definitely not my issue. Thanks again to all....Problem / questions solved. Doug
