Yet another oil cooler install (pics)

I finally decided to install the B&B oil cooler I bought a while back. I got alot of help and Ideas from the Pelicanites that posted their installs...Thanks!

Since it would be too close to the front trunk area, I got an under-the-car ducting kit from the TRE gang.

At first, I was a bit apprehensive about cutting on my 77 930, but I got over it and measured conservatively before the first cut. I fine-tuned the required opening with my grinder.

Sealed it up with RTV blue and riveted it on with 3/16 pop rivets followed up by peening them flat with a ball-peen and a dolly.

Wiped everything down and shot it with 3M undercoating spray.

I then fabbed a couple of brackets for the cooler with the help of my friend Jim Pierce. I thought that hanging it would be better than a cradle-type of mount. This cooler was installed in series with the Carrera cooler I installed 3 years ago.

I purchased the stainless wire cloth from a place out in Santa Fe Springs. I took my sweet time forming it to fit the RSR front spoiler opening before pop riveting the screen in place.

I just have to save up for the Blutorange paint job and I think I’m done (for now… ).

Cheers,

edit: forgot to mention, at a recent track day at Willow springs' big track, ambient temp was 92-94...My oil temp was at or below 210 all day long! A reduction of ~20 degrees, I love it!

Does that front end hook up to your original bumper brackets? Is it reinforced at all? I love the look!

yes it does, there are metal plates with studs molded into the RSR bumper. I fabbed a plate and modified my Euro crush tubes to accept the new bolt configuration. It is also bolted to the front fenders where the bellows would have been (of course).

Great job......I'd like to check it out on one of the upcoming runs.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

I have put off detailing the front trunk until after I install the fuel cell.

The chassis is an original Euro 930 with 304,000 miles on the odometer (don't know if it's the original odometer, but the chassis looks as if it sure might be!). I don't feel bad about cutting it up and modifying things.

When it comes time to paint, I'll most likely go with Blood Orange. I just have to save up and read up on how to prep for paint.

Garage
Tip: Use auto body seam sealer instead of RTV. You can get it from most parts stores, suvh as NAPA.

Thanks Capt...that would've been a better way to go.

IanC, Don't feel too bad, It's been hit on three corners (guessing from panel evidence) and it's been painted 3 times...original was that green-yellow and then orange then certain panels are white and finally red! It's an excellent DE car and A BLAST to drive on the street!

Cheers!

82 SC chassis with 3.2L works engine (what's left from it) built by GD Racing in San Francisco.
More details to come...
