Sub woofer choices

Looking for some input as far as which Sub you guy's have found to work well space wise. I have a 10" Kenwood with a rather bulky enclosure on the rear seats and want to use something more space sufficient. Non powered is preffered as I have an amp to run it. I've heard that there have been some installs either under the pass seat or behind the pass kick panel. I spoke to a tech guy at Crutchfield and he reccomends a Kenwood 113 KSCSW1 powered with 75 watts and comes in a shoe box size enclosure. I think it would be too small, only 6 1/2". I have a cab so need a good kick. Any input is appreciated.

I have a JL 10w0 and I think it sounds really good. Plenty of sound for the space. If you want more bass you could even go for a 10w3 or 10w6. I built a fiberglass enclosure which sits behind the front seats on that hump. Its out of the way and people can still sit in the back seat, well as well as they could before. This isnt a very good picture but you get the idea

That's a great Idea and making the enclosure should be a snap. How many ports did you have and any other construction tips?

Clarion makes a powered 7" sub that fits under the seats. About $150. I've heard it in a small car and was surprised at the performance. I was going to do the same but after installing MB Quart 6.5 components in the doors I felt I had enough bass.

I have the MB Quart 8" subs they are made for small enclosers

I have made custom enclosures for 8" kickers to go under the front seats of another car I own. I had to sacrifice partial movement of the car seats to fit them in properly. As far as subs go, if you go with an under the seat option, I wouldn't worry too much about high quality, you don't hear a whole lot of distortion or flutter from overdriving through the padding of the seat cushion, but the bass still transmits well. If you're looking to save space, I would advise against ported enclosures, they require more volume to perform correctly than sealed boxes do. When I find the time and the cash I will probably try to mount some 8's the same way for my Porsche, unless the space will not allow for it, then I'll explore other options.

i have a 10" solo baric sub from kicker, in my truck. tiny encloser. interior volume is .66 cubic feet. airtight box, so no need to fuss with ports. that thing bumps, alot. but i push it with a decent amp. an older MTX. i seem to remember an 8", that would probably need a tiny box.

I've seen a couple of small powered subs from Blaupunkt and Clarion that just fit under the seat, I'm not sure how well they work, but it seems like a good idea unless you're looking for earth moving bass!

I didnt use any ports. I wanted the smallest enclosure possible and like mschuep said you need a larger volume for the ports to work correctly. To build the enclosure I just used some spray adhesive to stick a plastic dropcloth to the area. Then I laid up the fiberglass right there in the car. It will smell funny for a couple days, but its not too bad. Just trim the excess to make the size you want, and make a support to mold the top. I used cardboard which worked fine but wasnt very symmetrical. I would use something a little more rigid. Just make sure that the top is flat so that the sub seals and the air cant escape. I then connected the top and bottom section and sealed any holes with silicone. Finally, I used some carpet padding to raise it up a little because my top wasnt very flat and covered it with carpet from home depot. I think i used boat carpet. I also used some batting to fill the inside of the enclosure. From what i read this was supposed to make the volume seem bigger. Then i just wired it up and sat it back there. Since it was molded right there it fits real snugly and doesnt need to be bolted down.

Great ideas fellas. I see that there are many options now. The crutchfield tech only gave me one but I knew you guy,s are the ones with the answers that work.

Resonant Engineering 8", only needs .25 cu. ft. with no port. Nice, tight and plenty of punch.

Sound is excellent for a 911. I am lightening the car.

I worked it out in a simple and cheap way. I have been using a Kenwood KSC-BP110 10" Sub in a Bandpass enclosure and just layed it in the passenger area. Rated for 300 watts but I'm only pumping 200 through them. Brainstorm...I just tossed it in the front compartment, it barely fit but it does with about a 1/2" to spare and it still sounds awesome. Can see the tach needle bouncing with the engine off. Easy fix! and $0
