Help locating where to put speakers in 72
I recently finished restoring my 72 911T. The only thing missing is a decent stereo. The person I bought it from before had ripped out the factory deck and did a crappy job at hardwiring in a Sanyo deck.
He also managed to stick some speakers under the dash with 1 screw each and the magnet holding the speaker to the metal. Can anyone tell me where the originals should be located? Is it in the center of the dash. There are no cut outs on the doors. Thanks. |
The original speaker was mounted in the middle of the dash. There is a speaker cutouts in each door behind the open pocket. I did not wish to cut the door covering so I purchased a speaker enclosure that mounts on the back deck. they used to be made by clover. They are still advertised in Pano.

In my 72 there are 2 speakers in the rear shelf. Mine sit below the shelf, and there are the holes in the shelf to allow the sound through. AFAIK they're factory, though I've seen several other older cars where the speakers sit on top of the shelf. I actually cut holes in the shelf to mount another pair back there.

1 that is the Moch 1 - about the worst place to put speakers you can find and a poor way to mount them to boot.
2 the center dash cannot give stereo - might be useful as center fill 3 the doors are the best, easiest place to put speakers - you can stick a bit of damping material behind the speaker on the door skin 4 the rear shelf is ok for fill sound - you won't get quality spatial imaging in a 911 anyway -- indeed, you will not get audiophile anything in a 911.... 5 another place is in the rear side panels - where a kid back there would rest his arm There are many threads on the issues of 'stereo' in a 911. After doing a search, re-post any specific queries and indicate your goals in terms of sound quality, what you listen to at home (if it's a $50,000 Levinson system, then you will want to buy a Lexus...), and your sensitivity to cost... You also need to make a decision about bass - you can do without (a la the BBC mini-monitors - Rogers was the most famous brand). Or you can compromise the 911s ability as a sports car and have pretty decent bass. Don't confuse a real sub-woofer with the woofers or mid-range speakers that a lot of car sound people call sub-woofers, BTW. |
My 72T came with the rear seats down and a lousy subwoofer and two speakers mounted in a box above them. It came out pretty quickly as I need the rear seats to transport anorexic midgets around.

Oh, yeah, a friend told me about that video! |
Ask copper for a pic of his backseat :D Looks insane, but it most definitely sounds sweet!
|
anorexic midgets can substitute for tweeters if they are wired to the right amp
that does not solve your foofer problems however |
Anyone have any experience with the speakers that mount in a panel under the dash that are sold by our host? That might be an elegant solution if you want to keep a somewhat stock look.

see my comments above ...

The product your above comment mentions doesn't seem to be the same as the one offered through Pelican. If those won't work, what would be a good alternative. I don't need a killer system, just decent sound from a vintage Blaupunkt am/fm, and I don't want to cut up my doors/interior. Suggestions?????

You could fab something for the kick panels, especially using these as a starting point:

same idea with same two problems -- non-stable mounting and location/orientation
the problem is that you have to answer "how decent".... - why not put speakers up there with bungie cords and see if you like the sound -- if so, then buy that. I DO think you'll need speakers up front somewhere. Kick panels are ok - but maybe you won't want to mod them either? How happy would you be with mono from the center speaker only? You could put a good one in there. |
A hint; you can buy SWEET 4x6 speakers on Ebay for cheap. No one wants just one, so people selling just one get rid of them at a discount. I just bought the top of the line Boston Acoustics 4x6 for $10.
