Redoing the padwork...bummer

The other day I posted, not without great pride, my first DIY brake pad change.

Test drove today. Heard a strange humming sound coming from the right side of the car. Vanished temporarily when I stepped on the brakes. Also the car suddenly felt rather unstable at speed.

Went back home and my brother, incidentally very handy with cars in general, ask what procedure I followed when changing the pads. Well I said, took bad out put good in. Simple.

He replies : You moron ! Goes with the job to insert a bit of anti rust solution under the rubber lip of the piston and yank it in and out a few times to make the slide easier. Redo it now !

Bummer. Well I did it all over again, which took me even longer with the anti rust part. But you know what, test drove and the strange sounds gone and the car is stable as a brick again !

Not that I don't trust him but is this what you usually do ? And could this really cause the handling problems.

Sorry for the long post..

Could the sound be the brake pads pulsing on the rotors? I've heard this happening when going with aftermarket pads, where they would chatter and a slight vibration can be felt in the steering wheel. From what I understand this occurs when the pad grabs the rotor and releases intermittently. Don't ask me why it does it, because of heat maybe ?
