Almost put the horse before the carriage
well kinda...I have a bastard 77 with an sc motor in it.
the up-grade plan was: track days, brakes, track days, suspension, track days, cadge and seats, bondurant, track-days, MORE POWER! Well that flew out the window when i got my BAE kit... MAN it was so much fun.... But the motor was on its last leg... upon tear down i found a broken head-stud(it was all corroded and pitted) I found a really nice turbo motor... started talking to the guy.. and then pulled the trigger. i thought it was in transit but he was taking forever to ship it(not really his fault).... in the meantime i started to get cold feet... I backed out of the deal because my girlfriend said: "your an idiot, 300hp? your going to be one of those guys who tip-toes around the turns and whails down the straights...you know.. the kind of people you ***** about" after alot of thinking... shes probably right... ![]() so its back to plan A... I think i will just rebuild my 3.0... but im sure 300hp would have made the skidpad more fun! ![]()

How much is it going to cost to rebuild the 3 liter correctly? How much was the turbo motor?
If you look at the performance/dollar ratio the turbo motor would have made more sense. |

So, Nick...
Does Plan A mean you're putting the BAE back in your 3.0 motor? Pat

Na BAE stays off.... I will get to 300hp next year...
."How much is it going to cost to rebuild the 3 liter correctly?" Jay moore of "aircooleds only" in Prescott AZ is going to teach me how to rebuild one.. i learn how to rebuild one (i value that).... so come next year... i can rebuild the turbo motor myself(under his watchful eye most likely) all said and done the turbo motor would have cost 8K... the motor for 5.5K and a top end would burn up the rest.. rebuilding it myself is going to cost 2K at the max If you look at the performance/dollar ratio the turbo motor would have made more sense For Mr Gore maybe... I can always go that way later... meanwhile the 6K i have earmarked for the rebuild can buy alot of suspension brakes and track-days... Quote:
![]() its not like im driving a fiat abarth or anything... believe me... i wouldn't mind beating up on your 3.6 every once in a while... ![]() but i need to have better car to handle it first(stock SC brakes would have made that fun) I need alot more track days too... im only 19.... and was tracking a car for only 3 of those...

Let's see, 4 new bilstein shocks, a set of later model carrera sway bars, and a good alignment and you have a very good handling car for under $1000 of upgrades. I can tell you from personal experience that an extra 100 hp is much more fun than the above mentioned supension improvements. It also makes more difference in lap times unless you are on a 914 AX track stuck in first and second gear
![]() Anything after that and you are transitioning from a street car into a track car. At that point IMO it is time to do it all the way or not at all, it sux having a car that is a half-assed track car and half-assed street car (no offense to the thousands of people on this board who own cars just like that ![]() Do you have SC brakes on the car? There's nothing wrong with stock SC brakes if they are in perfect operating condition. Just throw a set of high performance pads and some cool air ducting and you are there. If you need the cool factor you could paint them red, but lots of folks here think that only squids and honda drivers paint stock calipers red (or yellow). If SC brakes are not up to the task there is something wrong with them and they need to be repaired. You estimated $3500 to do the top end of the turbo motor, but you can rebuild the 3 liter for $2000? why not rebuild the turbo motor yourself for the $2000? There shouldn't be that much difference in parts cost. That would leave $1500 to upgrade suspension and brakes. Not all that much money but if you are careful you can get a lot of bang for your bucks. Last edited by sammyg2; 07-22-2005 at 02:14 PM.. |
