Tom Amon - Mobile Works West Rocks 2

As many of you already know, Tom Amon is now servicing Porsches on site. In my case, at my house. I needed to have the valves adjusted on my '87 Carrera. Normally this would run a couple of hundred bucks. What I did was to do the "apprentice" work before he got to my house. Jacked up the car, removed wheels, drained oil, cleaned everything up including the valve covers etc. Basically, when Tom arrived, all he had to do was adjust the valves. He was happy as he had never encountered this before. I had even ordered the gaskets and hardware from Pelican Parts and had them on the bench ready for use. I am happy because I didn't have to pay a shop rate to do the basics. Not to mention that I got to watch him work and ask questions along the way. I hope to be adjusting my own valves in the future.



When I was getting everything prepped for his arrival, I noticed that my right cam tnesioner line was leaking. When he got there, I asked him about it. Of course he had the part in his inventory on the truck and he did that too!



All in all, two hours of paid labor, $25 in parts and all I had to do was add the oil when he left





I would HIGHLY recommend Tom and his services to anyone. He knows EVERYTHING about our cars, is very friendly and patient enough to deal with all of my questions. I set him up with a clean garage, fans running and a cold soda and he did the rest.



I am having him back out in two weeks to replace my fuel lines, another project I noticed while getting the car prepped. Again, I will save hundreds over a shop.

I agree, Mobile Works' service is great. The other half is Jimmy Deering. He basically covers the Central Valley area. It is really convenient to have the mechanic come to the house.

I've had the valve adjustments done by Mobil Works and will soon have Jimmy perform a clutch service. I've learned plenty about my car by just watching. I can probably do the valves next time around.

I'm surprised that there aren't more mechanics doing this.

Tom's set up and service couldn't be bettered, I'm getting ready for the 1000 mile service after the engine rebuild he did for me a few weeks back. The car drives so well now, and today was the first time I added some oil - .25qt/ 950 miles! Before the rebuild I was using a quart per 350 - 400 miles. Definately the most skilled, honest and trustworthy guy I have ever had work on one of my cars. Looking forward to the service next weekend.

That I don't know, but since I am moving to Sonoma / Petaluma I asked him if he would go that far and he said heck yeah. In fact he had just finished a job in Petaluma.

For non-Bay Area people, this is about 90 miles north, through several cities, a bridge crossing and traffic. Of course, the travel charge would be a bit more.

Makes my move north better as far as a P-car mechanic is concerned

Too bad this kind of convenient service isn't available everywhere. I'd love to be able to tear everything down to the hard stuff and let a real mechanic take over.

You guys are to funny, and Tom Amon is awesome. Not that theres anything wrong with that...
I met him at the Parts Heaven swap meet, and told him I was planning on calling him for some brake work. He said, no problem, but you can do it yourself if you do this, this, and that. I did the job myself following Toms advice and had no troubles what so ever.
I would recommend Tom to anyone in the East Bay area, as his service and knowledge are exceptional !

To take this a step further Tom also stands behind his work.

Tom rebuilt my trans last week and for some reason, five or six days later an oil leak developed between the trans and the block. All new seals were used during the install so a new seal may have failed because of a defect.

When I called Tom to report this he set up a time to come out and drop the engine/trans AGAIN and look for the problem.

I didn't even have to ask.

In my mind what a person does when things don't go perfectly is the ultimate test and once again, Tom sets the standard here as well. The car is totally drivable, ****s and runs great, just loses about a tablespoon of oil a day so I'm not too bothered by any of this. Tom is coming out Wed. and we'll see what the cause is.

Once again, I highly recommend Tom.
