Removing Ignition Switch
 

I'm replacing the electrical protion of the ignition switch on my 1982 911 SC.

Following the detailed steps in the 101 Porsche Projects book they make it sound like it will "just slide out" once everything is lossened. Hell - can't get the damn thing to pop out of the dash hole. Need about another couple of millimeters for it to come out. I removed the nut beside the steering column. The hollow bolt that the nut was on seems loose. Does it need to come out?? Even wiggling the steering wheel while I am trying to pop the ignition switch out doesn't seem to do anything.

Am I missing something here?? I've been laying on my back for the last hour playing with the igition switch. So close, but so far away.

I hope you are successful and that you keep us posted on your progress. I am going to have to do the very same thing that you are doing because of inconsistant starting problems.

If its that loose, can you just remove the electrical portion from the rear. I did mine last weekend without loosening the switch mechanism from the dash. Not easy, by the way.

Fixed it. Took another 1 1/2 hours to change it and zap strap the wiring under the dash. All connector look good.

I'm in the middle of a reno on the main bathroom in the house. Not much time for Porsche play.

I was able to pull the electrical contact component off the igintion switch with is still in the dash. 2 slot screws hold it on.

By pulling the ignition switch down, I was just able to access the top screw. Bottom screw is easy. Used a slot screw driver bit and holder from a Craftsman driver set I gave my daughter - I knew it would be a handy set.

Didn't cure my hot start problem, but now I know it is not that component.

On to more checking............

it's a good idea to change the elec part every 100k mi anyway, imo.
