Thanks - yes I have a smile on my face and a sense of relief.
Oil lines are leaking around the thermostat - and I had an extremely hard time getting the lines off. Anything I can do??

Both? The inner one is tough to get any torque on. Other then checking for contaminants on the threads I try to tighten again (assuming that you haven't already tried). Maybe remove at the next oil change and check for tread damage if it still is leaking. Nice going!

Not sure how tight they should be, but maybe try to tighten them some more??? Any thoughts from the real experts???

Hooooorayyyy! Congratulations on the rebuild.
As far as the oil lines, did you "bugger" them or the t-stat up when taking them off? I had to use heat on mine to get them off, and never had leaks when they went on, and didn't take a lot of torque to tighten them.

I had a tough time hooking up the oil lines on the 3.6 install I did in a '88. For some reason the lines didn't want to approach the thermostat at the right angle. I ended up cinching the lines at the thermostat first, and then tugging the lines over to the wheel well clamp. Had to play with the alignment of the lines for awhile, but eventually they lined up pretty well.
Only ways I can see those lines leaking at the thermostat are: 1. Collar nuts aren't tight enough. They look like they are snugged since we can't really see any visible threads on the thermostat. 2. The spherical ends of the lines are not seated in the thermostat female end and allowing leakage. This is the more likely reason IMO. Try removing the wheel well clamp and loosen the collar nuts. Reposition the lines so that the ends seat better into the thermostat. Oh, nice going on the motor too. That's outstanding. A little oil leak from some oil lines is no big deal. The main issue is the motor and you got that covered. Rock on JD.

Well next oil change is today - So I'll be taking them back off and trying to fix/snug up. I did have quite a time taking them off - heat didnt work - so ended up cutting the nut off. Hope I didnt screw anything up.
That would be ironic, eh - do a whole friggin engine rebuild and end up screwing up my oil lines..

Jeremy:
Are these the fittings that you "Dremeled" off? If so, the cutting tool may have gone through the nut, and into the fitting threads, providing a nice little groove for oil to escape. Hope I'm wrong! Ted

Thanks Ted - but no I didn't go all the way through the nut. 2/3rd way - then split with a screw driver. I took off today - One fitting was a little oblong - I straightened. The other had a little burr where the compression fiting was. Both were a little off kilter. I lined up the termostat - rounded out one of the fittings - smoothed the compression area of the other - cleaned off threads - crossing my fingers...
First drive tomorrow.

Glad to see you up and running. Sounds like you are having all the "heart attack" problems right off the bat!
The good news is it should be smooth sailing from here on in!Cheers,

First Drive
Wow - going through the oil... 2nd day - 2nd oil change. Took the old girl out for the first time - cell phone, wallet with cash, oil, fire extinguisher, tool kit...
Clutch engaged low - then got a little easier. Brakes pulled a little then settled down. Car started right back up - checked oil lines - no leaks - woo woo! Idle settled down to 1,000 rpms - thanks Steve W for waht to check out - turned out to be the vacuum booster for the cruise control - the clip was not settled inside the receptor, 2nd issue was the "idle" microswitch was not engaged. Pulled out and noticed a little growl bark from the exhaust - well that's not bad... Noticed the valves a little more than normal - titanium retainers - or maybe just an adjustment... Anyway - Pulled away nicely - followed wayne's book - under 5,000 rpms (but she wanted more, she was just getting her legs, I could tell!) Accelerate, decelerate, constant rpms... Pulls nicely - especially above 4,000 rpms. = Got home - I do have a one drop drip from under the engine- not exactly sure where it's coming from - but noticed it when I did my hot oil change. Hopefully a retorque will help stop that. Anyway - very happy - nothing I can't work around - Wife will be able to park in the garage tonight - so that should make her happy - life is good. Here she is before we went... Cooling down when we got home...

That is great news Jeremy. Now the real test: biding your time 'til broken in and letting her rip.

Doesn't want/need a 3.6L
|
Congratulations Jeremy!
Remember when I was building mine (a year ago this week btw) and you were lacking the confidence to tear into yours? From the looks of it you did just fine. The valves will probably be loose during your early break-in period, when I adjusted mine at 1,000 miles most were very loose. This quieted things down a bit. Put some miles on it and than do some dyno runs so Steve can do some final chip tweaking if required. Ralph |

I'm pretty pumped... both from the way it looks - and now from the way it performs. She got a wash this afternoon to celebrate. My daughter thought it was cool to have her car back

Great to hear the oil line issues were settled. Oil leaks are a real PIA and killjoy after reinstalling the motor. I can only imagine the aggravation after doing a rebuild! I see the "custom" airbox lid in one of the above pictures. How come that ain't in your signature? I built it!!! Great job JD. Can't wait to hear the follow up after you get it broken in and crank out the new fast laps at the next DE.
