915 Transmission into 1969 911. Who's done it, what's involved?
Hi,
I'm just about to have my "get the car together on thursday" party, and Grady Clay, in his infinite wisdom, let me know that the 915 doesn't exactly "bolt-in" to the 69 chassis. So..if anyone has done it, I'd love to hear what was involved, and if there are any workarounds. Thanks, mto

There should be info on this board. Use the search funtion.
I know it requires a little banging of the tunnel with a hammer to make room.

I've tried, but haven't had much luck finding the info I need. I'm always a "search before post-er".

915 Tranny in Early Chassis
What is needed to swap a 901 with a 915, and is it worth it? 911 / 915 gear box swap? Good info in a few of those. I searched 915 swap.

Thanks for finding that stuff. sometimes you just have to search exactly the right way. Well...it looks to me like it's doable with a hammer, which is my preferred weekend racer method.
whew...

1) get corresponding clutch cable
2) get corresponding clutch arm that goes in the pedal assy- might as well buy a new set of bushings for it while you are in there 3) get corresponding axles for the 915 4) get the shift tower and long tunnel rod for the 915 (or search the archives on how much to shorten the 69 unit) 5) with the transmission only mounted in place, raise the bell housing till you see where it interferes with the back seat area. Take Porsche tool # big A$$ hammer and pound in on both sides. 6) check back up wiring leads and modify if needed 7) check on speedo you will be using- if electronic- run a pair of thin guage wires down the center tunnel, into the front trunk, then behind the guages for hook up. you will also need a positive source of power for the speedo 8) make sure you have the correct clutch package for the trans and finally the right length mounting studs to go thru the bell housing from the motor have fun

A little mod to Dave's list. If you have an electronic speedo, instead of passing loose wires through the tunnel, use the existing speedo cable housing as a sheath for the signal wires (remove speedo cable first). The sheath conveniently ends right behind the gauges anyway.
You can PM me for more info if you want. I have a '69 with a 915. Sherwood http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

Britain Smith,
Why does it look like you have a wheel bearing attached to your gearbox mount? Sherwood |

Britain,
Great photos...thanks. And I was going to ask the same thing. Is that for the transmission swingarm? (Not to be confused with Blinker Fluid or Muffler Bearings) ![]()

No problem. What kind of grease do you use? I first thought this was used to tighten the turning circle or to rotate tighter into a turn.
