Torsion Bars
Anyone know what size T-bars came stock in my 87' 911? What sizes are the best upgrade for a lightly steet driven car that sees a fair amount of track days?
Thanx.

Jorian,
The 87 has 19f & 25r. Torsion bar sizes I am planning on going to 21f & 27r with the Elephant bushings and I have Koni adjustables. I have read here that this is a good compromise for street/track combo.

I'm thinking maybe 22 front and 30 rear - Elephant hollow units. Anyone running this config?
Also I am upgrading to an Elephant rear sway and keeping my front thru-body sway (charlie bar - I think). Can't find replacement bushings for the existing setup.

Jorian,
I'm running 23/30mm on my 2800lb car and it is acceptable as a daily driver. Polybronze, revalved konis and STOCK sways on my '85 play a big part in ride quality. The handling improvement is a revelation. Simon

Jorian - I'm in the middle of doing this on my '88 Carrera. Smart Racing recommends 21mm front / 28mm rear for this use. The problem is finding solid 28mm units for the rear (remember the G50 cars use a different rear bar from 86-earlier). So I'm using 28mm Sanders hollow bars on the back.
Re: your swaybar comment - Pelican has all the OEM-type bushings for the stock bars and OEM end links for the rear.

Currently have 19/27 bars on my 87 with stock sways. Going to 21/29 next week and getting corner balanced. Also replacing a-arm bushings. The car is going to feel real good

When I tackled my suspension, I decided to go with an expert's (Steve Weiner @ Rennsport) recommendation, and go with a 'proven' combination that works. I have Bilstein HDs on the front & sports on the rear, Sander's hollow 22 & 29 t-bars, along w/ Chuck's poly-bronze bearings all around. Steve also steered me away from using some 23s on the front that I received by mistake...he said they would 'rattle my fillings', and would be 'too harsh' (for most people) on the street. I love the combination I have!

I was very nervous about going the step up from Keith's setup but I road in a number of track prepared cars with the 23/30mm and revalved konis setup that my race shop has configured for their track cars.
In some of the roughest roads in town, on R spec compound tyres with bucket/fibreglass seats and full roll cages and 200 +lb lighter, I still found the ride acceptable. Significantly firmer of course but NOT harsher. Now these cars had STOCK sway bars and that has a significant impact on keeping the ride quality bearable. I believe most of you guys run much larger swaybars. This is not the "normal combo" for you guys run but my race shop have found after many years of racing these to be ideal for our less than smooth tracks and tarmac rally conditions. When my car factors in road trim weight, road tyres and Chuck's polybronze the result is fabulous- the perfect balance of road and track. Now would Keith's combo be better for the road? Undoubtably. Is mine more track biased? Yes. I guess choose your compromise but do try to get rides/drive some cars to know for yourself. Simon
