Stupid engine compartment light question

The light in the engine compartment has not worked since I owned my car. I finally got around to replacing the blub and now it works with the lights are on, but it appears to stay on when the lights are on. I thought it would work like the interior light or the light in the refrigerator and it would go off with the engine lid is closed. The car is a 1981 911SC Targa - US model. Does everyone's light stay on, or am I missing something.

It will stay on as long as it is left on. You turn it off by rotating the center "tab" to close it.
