My car seems to have a squeeking problem that I think is related to the brakes (?) I can hear it at low speed, but there's too much noise at higher speed. It's a rhythmic squeek. It changes tune when I ease on the brakes, then completely goes away when I really push on the brakes. Do I have dragging brakes? Could it be something else? How long can I drive in this condition? (I'm planning to hit the Porsches2Oxford event tomorrow, then the car will be in for service!) At the very least, I want to make sure I'm not destroying my car by driving it like this.
Any help is appreciated. I'm fairly experienced in the 911 world, but not from a mechanic's standpoint. (..I'm pretty new to wrenching..) ...so be kind please! Thanks!

Possible brake dragging as you mentioned, or a bad wheel bearing.

What's the best way to fix dragging brakes? ...if that's what it is...

Typically, in my experience, dragging brakes emits a lower pitch (howl like) noise - not really a squeeky type. If you touch your brake pedal and the sound goes away, it's a good chance that your pistons are not retracting all the way, causing the brake(s) to drag. The fix is to rebuild the caliper. I would not take the car to the track in that condition as it will get much worse (ask me how I know). Bearings going bad will make pretty loud howling noises....

Definitely not a loud howling noise. I'm quite certain it's the brakes. Great...I'm trying not to spend too much money on this car yet. So much for that plan...
![]() Any chance it could be a sticking parking brake? The only reason I ask it pulls a little to the left under braking. Of course, the fact that the squeek goes away when I hit the brakes harder would probably mean it's nothing to do with the parking brake? Do we think it's safe to drive up to Oxford and back tomorrow? Probably an hour on the road total...

I would also suspect a dragging caliper. If it pulls slightly left the right brake may not be applying as strongly because it is sticking also. The E brake will drag all the time if it is dragging. A caliper rebuild is quite easy as well as inexpensive.

Thanks all. I'm still going to try to drive it this weekend (been looking forward to this too much to miss it) then plan on fixing it ASAP after that.

Should be fine - and yes, sounds like either a caliper piston that's stiff or you are nearing the end of your brake pads...

...I'm sure, if it's dragging, that I'm near the end of the brake pads!

Well I actually just bought the car in June. I had a PPI done at a respected shop in South Bend, IN (where the car came from). He told me the brakes "were fine" (says so in the report!). I have to admit, I heard the brake squeek pretty early after driving it home. Because it's summer (and really hot and humid) I haven't been driving the car much. I drove it to work yesterday and noticed it again, so I thought I'd post. Otherwise, the car performs quite well, so I think I'll be ok. I haven't had any problems stopping, just that little pull. For sure I'll be tending to it after the weekend.
Edit: The gent who did the PPI changed my oil and trans fluid, but didn't see the need for a brake flush. Now I'm thinking hmm...

Just a newbie observation, but after I changed my pads I got that humming noise and the car got unstable at speed. My mechanically far more initiated brother told me to put a bit of anti seize/anti rust under the rubber lip of the piston caliper and yank the piston in and out a couple of times.
Solved the problem. No caliper rebuild needed. If squeaking I would guess worn pads.

Let me clarify...the brakes squeek when I'm driving, not when I'm braking. When I start to brake (lightly) the 'tune' of the squeek changes. When I brake hard, it goes away completely.
Markus, thanks for the tip. I'm wondering if this isn't something that a good bleed and more regular driving won't cure? ...or at least one of those things that happened because of too little driving?

Gee, being a total beginner I really hate/love trying to give other people on this board advice.
But, what is the actual status of the pads ?

I haven't looked at them.
I'll check them out this weekend.
